the HQ Goblin is looking great and I love the Cludo characters and your Girlfreind's paintjobs on the D&D boardgame minis look excellent too

You seem to have got the hang of using washes already and your detailing looks nice and clean

I see you've had a little trouble with the yellow on one of the Cludo characters, my advice is to give yellow areas a basecoat of Bubonic Brown or invest in a pot of Citadel Tausept Ochre Foundation to create a strong yellow basecoat to work from

Thanks for the reply! I'll try the lighter basecoating on the yellow areas, if a second coating of yellow doesn't work. My yellow seemed to be a bit watery, but I'll shake the pot again, see if that helps.

Did some more painting just now, and I finished my goblin and my mummy, and I tried my hand a some painted tiles.

The mummy looks great! The goblin could perhaps do with a little more definition on his skin tones? Did you black ink this figure -if so a heavier repeat would add some shadow, particularly to the sword.

Try making a bit more of a feature of the eyes. A good trick is to paint them dark and then add a stripe of lighter colour (white, yellow, red etc)

A light brush or wash of Tin bitz is good for weapons you want to look slightly rusty and worn.

Yellow is always a problem colour. MP canary yellow is about the best I have used, but still needs care. Do as mortis says and undercoat with a lighter or complimentary colour.

I gave the goblin a snot green base colour, with goblin green highlights / drybrush, and then another drybrush with yellow/goblin green mixed. But it doesn't show well in the picture, it's rather subtle. I might try more contrast next time.
I'll go buy some black ink wash, don't have any atm.

the goblin's eyes are white with red dots, the mummy has black eye holes with red dots. But it's hard to see. I need to practice on eyes, it's so tiny, and my hands aren't THAT steady lol.

I normally don't like having the bases decorated with anything as it won't always match where they are, but the job you did on the Mummy base is making me rethink that.    It looks great!

I would also suggest the GW foundation paint as a base for yellow.    It works great!

Goblin and Mummy looking great in the close-ups - the painted bases look amazing, are you sure it's these are your first try at painting?

try adding a little black wash to the Goblin's sword and some extra highlights to it's face

Thanks for the nice comments , yes these are really my first painted miniatures, but I studied some youtube vid's before starting

I just tried to recreate the tiles from the board on the bases. I'm usually good at replicating stuff, so if I have some good examples and references, I can manage something nice :)

Next up is a D&D Ogre that will become a tail-less Rat-Ogre, and my soon to be wife (getting married this friday!) is doing a skeleton from D&D.

Tin Bitz is a paint. You can get a nice rust effect by either drybrushing it or diluting it a lot and washing it on.

Don't know if Babab Black Wash will work the same, but it will be vastly more expensive.  Half a bottle of MP Black Ink has lasted me over five years so far, and I black in every model, so that is a couple of hundred at least.

Allright. But what kind of black ink do I need to buy then? They don't have MP anywhere near here I think... I have a bottle of east-indian ink, if you know what that is, (used for old fashioned writing with a crown pen), so maybe I can mix that with water and use it as ink wash?

Anyway, I'm going to the store today, so I'll also be looking for an agent that makes the paint dry slower. It always dries too fast on my palette.

Never have the problem of the paint drying since I generally don't mix. You might try this...

Various miniature paint manufacturers offer Black inks -Vallejo, Reaper, etc -you can get them easily enough online -I posted sources for MP paints on another thread. GW used to make a black ink, but they discontinued all their inks when they brought out washes, even though the washes are not a direct substitute (like throwing away your shoes because you brought a car!)

I don't know if that pen ink you have will work -it may do. Try it out on one of your plastic soldiers and let us know how it turns out.

Just minutes before I saw your posted goblin, I had just started my own! Set myself a little quick paint challenge to knock out a unit in an afternoon. For a bit of variety I painted them in Wargames Foundry Forest Green rather than my more usual Orc and Goblin colours.

Like I said to Madame M, my first trying was "not so good", your first paintjobs are far better than mine, my compliments!
The bases are great! I used the same approach for my HQ minis.

Well, I haven't got any xD
But I might look around for some and see how that works. Never tried it. How would you attach it? Does it stick well, or can you simply glue it on? It's a good idea, I'll look into it!

And I've just cut out, filed the edges and glued the rangers of middle earth on bases, so they're ready for painting as well. Just have to decide how to paint em.

Awesome, looking forward to see them ^^
These mini's lend themselves great for lighter, woods-like colours, but also for black ninja like colours. And in reds and blues they might look royal even.
So I'm thinking: evil mercenaries in blacks, greys, dark reds, dark greens for the 4 classes,
hired men-at-arms: bright red, blue, yellow, green for each class. maybe even striped or some other pattern.

Allright, update!
It's such great weather today, I thought I'd sit down outside and do some painting.
I finished off the mini's my wife and I were working on: from left to right:
Skeleton Champion, Polar Warbear, Rat Ogre, Goblin, Mummy, Ice Gremlin. (all with 2 thin layers of matt varnish).
I might do the bases of the ice creatures with snow flock, and the skeleton with little rocks, later.

  

And here's my new collection of pre-owned Ogres:
front: 2 chieftains and 1 Lord (middle), behind them 7 warriors, last row 4 champions.
 
Still have many bits in the box to finish the warriors. :D
