I just found a site where you can buy dices
with a different value than the normal combat dices

Example idea for upgrade
Example shield:    you can a weapon (shield) Defence 3 white battle dice
upgrade by paying at each dice a cost  of  (50g)
a wite dice will change to a green one (more good shields on the green dice)
socketed weapon

here is the site ....

http://www.shopping-guru.de/index.php?main_page=advanced_search_result&search_in_description=1&keyword=heroquest
plays (advanced ) hero quest      (warhammer quest) with Kessandria
fan of warhammer figures to expand the armies of Morcar .
long live the internet for concept artwork ....

I recently bought some too. The white, black, orange, green and blue ones. They're slightly bigger than the original HQ dice though, but they look okay, and simply beg for new rules. I like your upgrade idea!

I love these dice.  I ordered 2 white and one blue set some time ago and they are brilliant!  Still need to get the black, green, orange and purple to use with the rules ive drawn up to use them.

Equipment has different quality and uses different colored dice depending on those traits.  Its fairly granular too so that you can toss in a black die with some white to give a slight edge to an attack, or give a weapon nothing but the orange dice to really make it pack a wallop!  Same goes for armor and anything else you can imagine.

Granted, you could get most the same odds with just the white dice, using the different symbols for success/failure than the standard, but the new dice make things more consistent.

This is interesting - I think in the Dice section of the forum there's a few links to custom dice solutions, blanks, stickers, pen work, special moulds, but these look like they fit the bill perfectly for Hero Quest.
The closest I have are the dice from MB's D&D board game - which is so similar to HQ it's scary.
