introducing myself

dock
Hi folks,

I am not entirely new to this site, but I did not yet take the opportunity to introduce myself.
I play HeroQuest quite some time, some 24 years now, on a daily basis. I work as a speech pathologist on a school in the Netherlands for children with social and communicational disorders (for instance ADHD, PDD-NOS) where I use the game to teach the pupils to cooperate.
I am always searching for new gaming possibilties to use in school.

Greetings,
Dock

That's the single coolest idea I have ever heard for the game.

Welcome sir, I hope the stay is useful for the kids as well as yourself!

Welcome to the forum mate, I am also trying to be a good teacher, teaching adults and kids. Some of the kids have attention problems.
In conversation classes i talk about Lord of the Rings charitors,  I also make some plastercast models to help the say what it is and to bribe them for good behaviour.
Good luck and happy gaming

Hi Dock!

Sounds like a really cool way of teaching co-operation.  How do you actually introduce the game - do you simplify the rules?  I mean, games like HeroQuest will look like a lot of work to play - all the different pieces etc. - or do all the orcs and heroes get people's attention?

Thanks for the enthousiastic reaction.
No (to your question) I have not simplfied the rules, I have made them more elaborate and complicated. But the kids dig it. They are caught by the coolness factor and want to know what they need to get the most out of their situation. I have actually made a lot of extra cards (for instance treasure) on which I use old (archaic) dutch words and they search and ask for explanations. For me, being a speech pathologist, this is a very desirable situation, because their interest in language is normally a bit under the average ;-)
If you want more information about my extras I will post them on the site.
A bit of sad news: I am fighting for my job at the moment: we have a terribly right governement at the moment and money and profit are far more important than educational progress:-(

Greetings,
Dock

Good luck mate on the job front.
The problem i have is when teaching teenagers, they sometimes find my Manchester accent too strong. Apart from speaking more slowly, do you have any other advice.
Cheers

Re: introducing myself

Hi Mortis,

You have asked for my cards. They can be found on
http://www.yeoldeinn.com/na-cards.php
All series made by Dock are mine. I have used many ideas from a german player named Xarres. His work can be found on:
http://www.hq-cooperation.de/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1141
I translated or changed cards and rules.
To get them more approachable I translated a fear amount of cards to english but I have many more in dutch.
As far as the problems on the jobfront: our government has had the good taste to collapse (I don't know if this is a correct translation to english) and the sharp edges of the cutback, as far as my work is involved, seem to be out of harms way for the moment.
I am not done yet with saving my job so my visiting the site will be varying, but I will try to make a contribution now and then.

Greetings,
Dock

Welcome Dock!
Nice stuff what you posted on the Olde Inn!
And it's a very great thing that you use HQ for educational aims.
