Warhammer Quest is back!

The all-time favorite among many fans of dungeon crawling, Warhammer Quest is about to make dubious return in the form of a computer game - but don't get too excited - it's only for the iPad and iPhone

It looks good - and you know, I'd buy this if it was available on the PC or X-box. It seems to me that GW know the only core audience they've got left are high-disposable-income no sense of value for money types and are catering only to that market - after all if you're spending £12 for shoddily cast single 28mm miniature on foot, the purchase of an iPad and then whatever it costs to download the 'app' (that's "application", if like me you use real words when writing and speaking) will be all in your stride. It strikes me that GW have a lot in common with Apple ...

... anyway here's a link to The relevant post on the GW promotional Blog

Hahaha, and if you think it's bad in YOUR country, try coming to the Netherlands, where English is becoming more and more woven into our beautiful Dutch language.

Words like: chill, flex, relax, app, dope, etc. are common, and worse, in businesses people talk about: management, go-getters, and all those other modern business terms we didn't have 10 years ago. I hate that.

There are perfectly good and understandable DUTCH words for all of this people! It annoys me to tears.

But back OT: any ingame material yet?

The following pictures are from the GW blog, the look to be samples of what the game will look like but not actual in-game screenshots - I'm guessing the project isn't quite far enough along for them to have full screen shots or working game play footage.

^ I can't help but think these graphics could be used to make an nice set of card-stock dungeon tiles

I hope the game is better than that rubbish voice over.  Nice tiles though.

I'm posting this from my iPad and I am very glad to read this.  I have been looking for a good game for my iPad.  Morris, you're right though those tiles are epically detailed and would make great tiles.

There's always been rumors and speculation about Warhammer Quest coming back - ever since GW stopped production. Sadly I think the iPad game is the closest thing we're going to get to seeing Warhammer Quest back on the shelves of hobby stores - but maybe that's for the best, there's every chance that the current GW studio would ruin WHQ with a re-make, as we discussed Here a while back before Dreadfleet flopped like sodden rag-doll

Okay, I've been playing this for a few days now, despite a few short comings it's fairly loyal to the original game.  That promotional video doesn't seem to have much to do with the game.  Despite a few graphics effects, the actual dungeon play is top-view only (using tiles similar to the ones posted above)  The strength of the game is in the rules and leveling up of the characters.  It's brutal and random, like the original -with extra monsters turning up during a fight.  I forgot how when WQ is played strictly it truly punishes the cautious - but if you are victorious the gold and xp stack up from random encounters.  Random events occur in settlements and en route to dungeons - usually the equivilent of being mugged or characters given a penalty for one dungeon. There is a fixed campaign map which reveals itself. You can choose quests and destinations and when you arrive at a settlement a book opens and the town is magically built before you - but the effect just makes you wonder why the dungeon play isn't 3D.  At first, I wasn't comfortable with it visually.  Apparently HD screens mean the text has to be tiny, but this could be a sign that it could be ported to PC.  The only mobile app features I've encountered so far are the opportunities to buy extra character templates (and I think you can buy extra gold for shopping and training) - neither are essential.  I can imagine the game working well in Steam.  I'm not sure what this game has to offer the modern gamer, but it's certainly a welcome distraction if you're familiar with the WQ board game.

My next plan is to play the game whilst using the actual board pieces and figures - as a sort of enhanced solo experience.  It's worth the £3 (for at least as long as the company has the license - apps have a tendancy to vanish sometimes - when you go back to reload them onto the ipad)

This is really strange - I thought I'd posted again with some observations, which now were perhaps incorrect.

After further play I thought that there was a limit to levels for the heroes - it stopped at 5 for me, but now a new set of quests seems to be opening up I seem to have two level 6 characters - not sure how or when that happened.

Developer home site:
http://rodeogames.co.uk/warhammer-quest/
There's a link to a twitter feed, which might be worth following, just in case they announce it for other platforms.

The bad news about this game is that it's big on in-game purchase temptation.  You reach the edge of the map and you find a new settlement, but you can't visit that town without buying the Skaven expansion.  Settlements have different market lists - in the spirit of the original game - where you'd roll for item availability - except here the settlements are specific places and the lists aren't random. As a result you get used to one place being better than another when it comes to stocking up on supplies.  I kept crossing the map (at great peril from random events) to get back to a town which sells firebombs (a dwarf item).   The settlements are the anchor point for small quest dungeons and plot related dungeons - which appear on the map only when you're in a specific town.

Some treasure / reward items are unusable by the main four characters.  A powerful artefact is rendered redundant without buying extra character packs.  Also, as with all of these games extra gold can be bought with real cash.  These in-app purchases feel a little cynical, to be honest.

It also sticks in big battles - I think it's when monsters can't move - a small bug, but it can ruin the game - I'm sure it'll get fixed.  It's only happened twice to me and I was losing at the time (I'm running it on an iPad3 with plenty of memory spare).

If you like the Warhammer Olde World you'll be entertained by Ork Shamen casting "Ere We Go", beer jokes, halfling soup, snotlings and so on -
It's also a fairly good emulation of WHQ which at 1st-3rd level can be a blast, but after a while cumulative attacks and actions just slow everything down.  It's certainly made me think that if I ever design a game system I'll only ever let players do one action /cast/roll die/use-item per turn.  - But that could be my D&D roots showing. ;)

It's still good, but I just hope it's going somewhere without me having to shell out for an expansion.

Steam is showing a deluxe version now. Its a pre order for the pc which contains all the new characters.
I have been playing this on my ipad for a few weeks now and I have been able to fend off the darkside of in app purchases(IAP): .

As for the PC deluxe version i just purchased? It has all the everything, so i dont have to IAP.

I really liked this game when I first got it on iOS but the version I'm now playing from Steam seems to be stingy with rewards, costs a bucket-load more and has horribly overpowered Vampires turning up in the middle of "orc & goblin" quests.

It's been getting a lot of flak for the in-app purchases too.  Buying extra heroes and quest packs seems fine - you could do that with the original boardgame.  But the way they are doing this seems very underhanded and greedy to me.  Buying gold?  Treasure cards that you can't use without buying the Witch Hunter or Ogre characters?

It's got some stinking reviews on Steam since it came out.  I only gave it a 4/10 myself.  What do people on here think?
