WIP PROJECT: hydra by day chimera by night

the hydra is a very cheap, very effective weapon in the Guard arsenal, but as yet there is no formal model save the FW one.

im very keen to make one, but also have the versitility to use it as a chimera when needed.

as it pans out, nothing could be easier!

plastic hydra tank

the cupola is removable, as is the weapon mount. in the rear section i used a razorback weapon mount trimmed down and it fits perfectly. i then used two of the angled chimera armour sections as a rear deck and rear lower hull.

chimera hydra

the upper chimera hull fits perfectly but you DO need to trim the lower floor section back about 5mm so it fits against the lower angled rear hull. you have quite a margin of error there so dont be afraid to cut.

the chimera version is indistinguishable from the normal tank, but when needed it can bust out the aegis defence turret like a crazy transformer. just remember NOT TO GLUE the cupola on the hydra section. everything else is slick and easy. any questions just post below and i will put more pics up

Excellent!

not only is this one of those conversions that looks so good that if didn't know it wasn't you think it was a new kit, but it's also a multi-use model

am I right in thinking that you can now between all your different tanks with interchangeable bit field all of the Chimera and Russ based IG tanks? and if not you can only be a few models off by now right?

there are a couple of FW russes i dont have but in the main codex, yes pretty much. but to be fair to GW the new kits encourage swap outs. i had to glue the hellhound so i need to proxy the other varients!

you HAVE noticed the big problem tho... how am i going to fit it in my very specific unit marking scheme? this could cause problems....

Build alternate turrets just for this tank chassis, if you need to get around marking problems.
It'll give you a bit of work on the side when you're otherwise busy ;)
