One of my long term, back burner, slowly getting done between other things projects is to re-base and paint at least 1 set of HeroQuest figures for use in games. I've always loved the Heroquest figures (and furniture) and IMHO it's testament to their quality that the designs have stood the test of time and still look great next to the new figures of today nearly 2 decades later.
Probably the hardest part of the process is the re-basing which involves carefully sawing away the base from the model's feet using a very sharp razor-saw, trying not to damage the figure in the process. I then clean up the figure and carry out some minor conversions if I feel the figure needs it before re-mounting it on a standard gaming base (usually with a bit of textured plasticard to give it a nice dungeon-y feel)
Here's a few pictures of some of the HeroQuest figures I've been working on
^
Mummies, the one on the right has it's arms re-positioned and the hands replaced with ones from the Zombie sprue ^
talking of Zombies, here's a stock HQ zombie remounted on a 25mm base ^
Work in progress on a Barbarian, a Wizard and a Dwarf. This particular Barbarian had a broken sword so I replaced the sword blade with the runesword from the Chaos Marauder sprue to represent the Spirit Blade artefact from the original game. I never liked the 'young wizard' figure too much, I replaced his raised right hand with one holding a sword from the Mordheim Mercenaries sprue and added a head to his staff made from 2 Night Goblin shield-bosses carefully glued back to back. The Dwarf is completely stock apart from the new base. ^
A Fimir, a Chaos Sorcerer and a Goblin, under coated and ready to be painted. Note that the Fimir and Goblin have had their damaged weapons replaced.^
One of my bitz boxes crammed with minis from quite a few copies of HeroQuest, Advanced Heroquest and several expansion packs, as you can see I have a long way to go with this project
