Updated 'Old' Space Crusade Board

grossier
Fellow SH & SC Fans,

I stumbled across this board a few days ago, and I'm glad I did.  I'm psyched that there are other old school people out there that still play Space Crusade.

Something I've been meaning to do for a while, but haven't been motivated to do so..until now, is make new Space Crusade boards that look like the original ones.  Just updated a little bit.... or maybe a lot.  I don't know.

Here is some progress (old versus new):

What should I do with the boarder?  I kind of want to use something close to the original one, but more fleshy and wet looking.  Sort of what was on the original box.  Any ideas?

Please give me feedback.  I went with black walls without doors so that it would be more like Heroquest.  Where you put doors either closed or open where you want to.  Not just where they are on the board.

Nice!

I like the way it has a modern style to it without losing the feel of the orginal

of course once you've got the original boards done (and I guess the ones from Mission Dreadnought and Eldar Attack too) you could start making more variants with different layouts and special rooms

Personally I'd still go with having the door places marked on the walls, my group tends to slide the Space Crusade doors to one side to show they are open and side them back when closed - I've seen people take the card part of the door out of the stand to indicate an open door, but I find that chews up the card more quickly. Also it makes it easier to see were a door is supposed to be when they get knocked over during gaming.

HeroQuest doors of course had open and closed versions - are you planning to do your Space Crusade doors with a similar sort of idea?

That is a good point about the closed doors.  I'll add the doors in on the floor plan.  I was planning on making closed doors or just using a base to represent a door.  But, I want to stay within the original design intent of the original game.

I've heard of people using space hulk tiles for space crusade, because the maps aren't that important.  However, it is easy enough to cover over the doors later if you want to. I would rather start with something that is very close to the original boards and then create new boards later.

My goal is to finish a 12" x 12" tile a week.  My hobby time is pretty limited, but I want to see these things get finished.  The first one is taking the longest.  I'm still figuring out how I want the acid craters to look in the floor grating.

I'm still working on it.  I made up a custom border that is inspired by the original, but updated.  Like the rest of it.

I did get a little side tracked working out some boards for Zone Mortalis.  BTW, if you haven't checked this out you need to:

It is amazing and brilliant.  I'm trying to come up with a way to use it for Space Crusade.
