Triple Helix Wargames (Westbury, Wiltshire)

The opening of a new independent wargaming store is always good news, but Triple Helix is something to get particularly excited about because it's so much more than just a shop where you can buy your miniatures. In fact the shop is only a small part of it,  you see Triple Helix is based in an industrial unit on the Westbury Trading Estate and the main part of the building is a large open space full of gaming tables.

^ the large open gaming-area could comfortably accommodate a medium-sized tournament and there are more tables to come!

For a small fee you can hire a table (with terrain) and spend an afternoon playing your favourite wargame. There's a multitude (15+) of different tables for Sci-fi, Fantasy or Historical gaming and this is early days yet, the staff and local volunteer hobbyists are building and painting up new high-quality terrain to add to the tables all the time.

^ Triple Helix is run by Steve and Charlotte a couple who are both enthusiastic hobbyists and like most wargamers they are very friendly and always willing to talk about the hobby.

Triple Helix has a great friendly, welcoming atmosphere because it's run by wargamers for wargamers. Unlike other stores, the staff at Triple Helix would much rather be playing wargames with you than pressuring you into buying the latest Codex or Battalion Box-Set (that's not to say that they wouldn't appreciate you spending some money in the store part of building though).

^ The store stocks so much more than just Games Workshop products

Not only does Triple Helix stock the standard range of Warhammer, Warhammer 40k and Lord of the Rings products from Games Workshop at a discounted price, but they also stock many other ranges for your Fantasy, Sci-fi and Historical needs, including Gale Force 9's accessories, Mantic's awesome Kings of War range, Paint, Brushes and Tools from Army Builders, Flames of War miniatures, Battle Field in a Box terrain, Napoleonic miniatures from Victrix, Historical ranges from Warlord-Games and many other ranges besides. And as I've mentioned before, Triple Helix has only just opened and they are also looking to stock miniatures from many other companies in the near future.

^ they even have an on-site café

also attached to the site is a small café where you can sit down and have a cup of tea and a snack between games, there's also a comfy seating area at the back of the main gaming area where you can sit while you flick through your newly purchased rule books and talk about hobby with other customers and finally at the front of the gaming area (under the windows where you can get the best natural light) is a row of painting stations where you can assemble and paint your armies on-site.

If you're anywhere near Westbury and into wargaming you should definitely go and visit Triple Helix ... and even if your not near Westbury go and visit anyway, make a day-trip of it! Or failing that go and visit their website: http://www.triplehelixwargames.com/

Mortis was kind enough to drive me over to Triple Helix and the place is awesome. Steve seems to be a great guy and took the time to show us around.

The Gaming area is pretty huge, I can see why people are choosing it for tournaments as there is plenty of room and a decent selection of terrain (well at least for 28mm scale stuff). The canteen is far more than adequate, its not a 5 star restaurant by any measure but the offer of hot and cold food and drinks makes spending a day at Triple Helix gaming seem like a very good idea. Of course you can't have food facilities without providing for the inevitable, the toilets are handily situated right near the gaming hall. The shop is of a fair size and already has a fairly diverse stock of miniatures as Mortis has already listed. Steve also seemed keen on stocking new ranges and to order in items from other companies on demand, best of all at a 10% RRP discount for anything that was available to them at trade prices.

The few people in the store seemed to be more mature gamers, whilst we were gaming there was a 40k game and a Flames of War game in progress. Best of all was that there was no hard sell, in fact when Mortis wavered at the counter Charlotte seemed genunie in saying that he didn't have to buy anything (of course he did though). All in all a very pleasant couple of hours were spent there gaming (and purchasing new minis!).

I clicked on the website link & it sems to have moved/been sold on?Do they sell paints & tools?I found the bloke from Frome model shop to be rude & Trowbridge toyshop is not specialised enough & I hate going to Bath to the modelshops there as it is too in your face-Westbury sounds good.

That would be because the link is now: http://triplehelixwargames.co.uk/

They do indeed sell paint and tools along with a lot of other rather tempting things, lovely friendly store staff as well so what more is there to ask for?

Yes quite correct the link does need updating so it points to the new site (thanks Rob)

I would recommend Triple Helix Wargames as the place to buy your miniatures, materials and tools from in the BANES and Wiltshire area

Thanks for that.I did not pick up on your reply as I opted not to be alerted when someone posts to the thread........not because I am not interested but I cannot cope with to much in my 'inbox'.Sorry you had to tell me twice about triple Helix-but thats the reason why-I check for a response as time allows & more importantly if my memory allows.I will not be asking so many questions now,so you can get some rest..............I could drop the red foam inserts & the GW cardboard box with plastic paint trays(If I can remember where I put it & still have it?) at Tr Hel,Westbury?.When I bookmarked the website today in response to your post on the 2nd Oct I did not connect it to the venue in Westbury on this thread-The light has finally gone on !!!!!.....I can to overdo things due to my bipolar, but I am going to ease off now.Just waiting to hear if Spurticus Rex would spray a car for a fee?(The Saints Volvo). The thing about modelling is the winter never gets boring.
