The End of Warhammer? Rumors

I've heard rumors of GW discontinuing Warhammer Fantasy  Battles permanently this summer and replacing it with a completely new skirmish game.

Anyone else heard these rumors?

Re: Rumors

Yep - Beasts of War did a big thing on the rumors.

Less armies, with armies merged, e.g. Dwarves,Ogres, Humans as one army.

Set a few hundred years in the future of current WHF.

They've obviously got tired of the "slow burn" approach to wringing money out of their customer base with constant rules iterations / army-balance-changing figure releases / codex's et al, and have now decided to go for the jugular.
Still, I suppose it'll help pay for the building work they've had done to "GW HQ"

Ooh - I wonder what sort of odds the bookmakers would give me against them leading their advertising campaign with "There's never been a more exciting time to get involved........"

Re: Rumors

Well. I doubt I'll be playing that, then.

I also heard that WHF is not even in the top 5 of fantasy miniature wargames anymore.
I guess Warmachine is top dog, but what are the other games?

Hmmm, that's a bit like asking "how long's a piece of string?" - there's LOADS of alternative rulesets / games out there with a massive choice of different mechanics / levels of complexity etc to suite different tastes (a quick google will turn most of 'em up)
For me though, 3rd edition Warhammer Fantasy Battle is the perfect set of rules

Re: Rumors

No, I mean, what are the fantasy miniature games ranking higher than Warhammer Fantasy Battles in sales.

Reaper has a game of their own, but I know next to nothing of it. No idea if it's good and/or popular.

And yes, Warhammer 3rd Ed. was the best, except perhaps the magic system which was kind of clunky.
Also, what was up with Heroes with levels in increments of 5?

Re: Rumors

I hadn't heard this rumour but I suspected something was up because GW seemed to be gearing up to kill off Warhammer at some point in the near future. Having a campaign called The End Times was a big clue IMHO

Well I'm pretty sure (as you said) that WarMachine and it's sibling Hoards would be on there.

Mantic's Kings of War is pretty popular these days, so I imagine that's pretty high ranking. Especially when you consider it's open policy toward miniatures means people will be re-using their Warhammer miniatures

A lot of people seeming to be playing Malifaux by Wyrd Miniatures these days too

Reaper of course has it's game WarLord and whiles there's no doubt that the miniatures are best sellers I don't know if anyone actually uses them to play the game.

And yea there's tones of other alternative games out there (and on my bookshelves) but I don't know how many are still high-profile games, many are out of print.

I went on a bit of tangent with regards to this, so I've moved it into It's Own Thread Here

I think King Of War is closest in the "big league", but I've heard that Armies of Arcana is well worth checking out.
I wonder if GW's The Big Announcement on Feb 7th will be WFB related?

based on what was released last weekend, I would suspect something Harlequin related

False alarm - the "Big Announcement" was just a notification that the Warhammer World re-vamp is finished

Re: The End of Warhammer? Rumors

"Ticket Only" access to Warhammer World's opening weekend - and no mention of ticket price anywhere in the blurb (obviously a case of if you need to ask the price, you can't afford it!)
So, out of curiostity (and with total disregard for one of the cats lives), I clicked on the "Order Ticket" button - £11.19

I just hope this isn't a sign of the times and is just a callous way of making (more) money from the "I was there" brigade, and the access charge ISN'T a permanent feature.
Though I'm no fan of GW these days, it was always a pleasant enough place to visit, especially since it's local

Re: The End of Warhammer? Rumors

of course you may have just bought a ticket TO the big announcement ... an unveiling of whatever they are trying next to rejuvenate sales instead of the obvious
