The Dungeon Kitchen.

Do you think fantasy game settings enforce gender stereotypes? Actually, never mind - here's some pictures of a young blond maiden in a kitchen.
The kitchen pieces are from Scotia Grendel's 10035 - Tavern Kitchen set (part of their awesome 28mm Fantasy Scenics range). While the lovely maiden model is an old Grenadier model I got hold of via an excellent site called Forlorn Hope Games You've probably seen pictures of the fire place with meat roasting on a spit here on the forum before and if you're a member of the Old School Miniatures group on Facebook (or maybe even if you're not) you may have also seen the larger piece with the ovens and range in some of my pictures of my group's dungeoneering games. The reason for this is that I painted the separate pieces of the set at different times in between other projects (in fact I think there may have been space of a year or more between painting them) and I have only in the last week finished painting the last piece; the table. So here finally is the whole set together and painted, plus the maiden which I also finished painting recently.
Over all I'm quite pleased the kitchen set now it's all finished, but I'm not really sure what to say as I come to write about it here.
The fire place was painted quite a while back and I don't remember exactly which paints I used - the larger piece and the table however were painted a lot more recently so I can give you a quick run down of some of the paints I used. The stone was painted in the usual way I do stone, starting out with Citadel Adeptus Battlegrey and then dry brushing Codex Grey and Fortress Grey with an extreme highlight of Citadel Bubonic Brown here and there. The metal parts of the ovens (the doors, stove top and so on) were painted Citadel Tin Bitz, followed by MP Copper and then shaded and glazed with Citadel Devlan Mud followed by Badab Black to dull the colour a little. The metal pot on the range, the rims of the small kegs under the table, the metal plate and spoon on the table and anything else you see that is the same colour were painted Citadel Boltgun Metal, again over a base of Tin Bitz and shaded with Badab Black. The earthenware pots were painted appropriately enough Citadel Terracotta highlighted with progressively lighter mixtures of Citadel Terracotta and the much lighter MP Terracotta. While the stoneware pots, plates and cups were painted Citadel Graveyard Earth and highlighted with Komando Karki and then P3 Menoth White Base. The flames in the range were painted in P3 Sanguine Base then highlighted up through Citadel Gore Red, Blood Red, Blood Angels Red, Firey Orange until I reached pure Golden Yellow.
I also had a lot of fun using different combinations of paints, glazes and varnish to paint all the different liquids and glass jars and bottles. Finally the sacks under the table were painted Citadel Graveyard Earth and highlighted up through Komando Karki to Bleached Bone before getting a thinned wash of Griphone Sepia. And I think that's about it.
As for the Maiden, her skin was an experiment with various flesh colours from the Army Painter range with a thinned wash of Citadel Ogryn Flesh for extra shading. Her dress makes use of P3 Exile Blue, P3 Cygnar Blue Base and P3 Cygnar Blue Highlight although a seem to remember using a mixture of P3 Cygnar Blue Highlight and Citadel Lightning Bolt Blue as the final highlight in places. For the hair I used varying mixtures of Citadel Bubonic Brown, Desert Yellow and Bleached Bone, a wash of Griphone Sepia and a final highlight of Desert Yellow, Bleached Bone and P3 Menoth White Highlight - occasionally grabbing Bert's hair to use as a reference (I was at THW and he was the only blonde to hand). Final details included Citadel Red Glaze for the lips and a little extra shading around her eyes. The base - in case you 1; noticed and 2; wondered - is an Armalion base fitted over the extensively filed-down original integral base of the miniature.
Well that just about wraps it up for this post - I'll finish with a picture I did while messing about with the pieces …
