Tank Destroyer conversionWhen i saw an old Imperial armour book, i liked the Tank destroyer, This reminded me of the Swedish S tank. I was in our local model shop when i spotted a couple of old rhinos going cheap, then ping i had an idea for a couple of thing to add to my imperial guard army.
I had been making all sorts of models over the years, so i had plenty of bits to use. I started with building the main skelington frame of the rhino.
I had two old Airfix heavy bunker battery guns, so using some green stuff i fitted the main gun in place. I then sawed off the old tracks. I chopped about a quarter of some old tanya tank wheels and fitted them in place, then chopping up a tanya track fitted this in place.
Using my pin drill i made up two bulldozer rams, then fitted to the dozer blade then on the model. This was a little tricky as i ended up making a few rams till i got it right, Also trying to give good ground clearance as a real tank would have to go over rough ground. I did this so it could dig out it;s own firing positions.
So with the basic tank made up, time to add some bits. I added a commanders hatch with on Grendal chain gun to be a heavy stubber. Some more green stuff as a cam net, search light and as I'm an ex tank soldier for further detail some 1/76 scale oil cans and some 1/32 scale jerry cans. At the sides i made one escape hatch, using some plastic card i up armoured the tank. At the rear i added mud flaps and one tank wheel as a spare with a couple of track links.
I painted it up and off we go, as usual your new tank is always the one that dies first. As a double use the tank's gun barrel can be removed to make a Thunder siege tank. For the big kid at heart it can fire match sticks.
Basilisk conversionFor my imperial guard force i needed some heavy fire-power, i still had a second battery gun so using an old rhino kit i built up the main frame. I built the rear turret to be like a AS90 or M109 square and boxy. The gun mount was a little tricky to do but with some cursing i got it to move up and down.
The problem i now had it's rear was too heavy so it kept falling to the rear so i made up a front shallow bucket to dig its own positions. Adding some rams i made earlier. I added a Grendal gun to act as a heavy bolter. A commanders hatch added to the top a few plates of plastic as access hatches.
This too can fire match sticks!
The paint patterns i use are the Warminster Garrison Camouflage with added black lines. I have used different sandy colours to make some tanks look old, and some as newer replacements.
Sentinel scoutsI have three different sentinels scout walkers, the first one i got in Germany the egg-on-legs one. The second was the more solid legged one. ( i got two of these but converted one to an Ork dreadnought) The third is the newer Armageddon one with lascannon. I added a comms dish to this one.
Vanquisher lemon russI started with doubling up the tank road wheels then adding them on to the half made hull, this as a little fiddly at first, but with a snipe here and there i made it fit. The tracks were no problem as i had lots of extra links. I fitted the heavy bolters side sponsons. Using two wartrucks front bumpers side by side and making some more rams i built up a mine plough.
The turret i had to think of a way of making it longer, i had tried a few things but it did not work. So i was tapping away with my pencil, then it hit me, Use the pencil. So after a search around the house i found a round pencil. I chopped it to size, with some superglue it came together. The turret did not look right so using somemore plastic card i built a turret around the old one.
A vehicle storm bolter was fitted to make a coaxial gun and a search light for the other side. I fitted track links to up its armour for siege battles, using epic hell hound flame drums i used these as stowage bins. A commanders hatch and loaders hatch were added to the top with a tank. A tank commander in the turret. A commanders heavy stubber added, with a comms dish at the back.
More links added around the hull. Some time later i added track guards.
Exterminator Turreti swopped some bits with a friend and got hold of a turret. I used a model predator lascannons sponsons guns as auto-cannons and after a paint job it was done.
I painted a couple of my tanks camouflage similar so the turrets matched the hull pattern. ( i now can swap turrets to suit the battle.)
More Tank Conversions coming later!!!
