Spirits

My players have a particular fear of ethereal monsters and have yet to develop any decent strategies to deal with them (instead they just beg for Magical and/or Holy weapons) … thus I have a particular fondness for putting ethereal monsters on the table. Here are 3 such models which I painted a long time ago and since have seen much use in my games

These 3 ghostly models were made by Citadel and originally sold together as a 'Spirit Host' for Warhammer, all 3 miniatures were intended to be mounted together on a single 40mm base - but I never had any intention of using them in that way and thus mounted them on separate square 25mm bases with some chunks of plastic taken from a Zvezda castle tower glued onto them for texture

These were painted the better part of 10 years ago or more, so I have little recall of what colours I used, but I painted the miniatures in washed out browns in an effort to appear ghostly in an faded way rather than appear as if they are glowing like many people do

Here's some old pictures taken not long after I painted the miniatures - the cobwebs you see are real ones, the piece of the terrain the spirits are standing on had been sitting untouched on a forgotten high shelf for a long time

Re: Spirits

That is a fantastic way of getting good-looking terrain.

I think these have been painted and in your collection longer than I've known you and that's quite a damn long time now. Still lovely work. Definitely prefer your colour scheme for these rather than the glowing green/grey look, especially for mordheim/dungeon games.

Re: Spirits

Thanks guys

Yea these are quite old now, but they still see regular use when I want to bring out some low level ethereal nastiest for a dungeon, although more recently I've tended to favor my Spectral Reapers for that role

yea I'm rather pleased with how these came out, but I did recently stumble across a very effective way of painting the more traditional 'glowing green' spirits so I might give it a try on one or 2 of the ghost type miniatures I've got lying around unpainted - I could even use the different styles to distinguish between different types of ethereal creatures.

Thinking of which; I've never really understood what the distinction between Ghosts and Specters was supposed to be exactly ... anyone care to weigh in?

The cobwebs are real.

I'm really liking this naturalistic look - dirt, filth and age. (Total opposite to my own peppermint glowing spirits!)

Re: Spirits

Mr Babble! Good to see you here again

Thanks, I think this was a bit of an experiment at the time, spurred on by a desire to make my ghosts look different to everyone else's. But I mentioned before, I'd quite like to paint some of my newer spirit models in the more traditional glowing green.

Which reminds me of something I think I failed to mention before ... I do have in my collection a literally glowing ghost!

I think I must have painted this when I was about 12 or 13 (or maybe even younger) - It's another Ghost miniature by Citadel, this time from the early to mid 90's which I painted with green-ish glow-in-the-dark paint over a white undercoat. Which in hindsight wasn't as clever as it seemed at the time since very few games are played in the dark - also it doesn't photograph too well, so I've had to play around with the contrast, brightness and colour of this photo to give you an impression of what it looks like in real life when the lights go out
