The main thing I love about the forces of Chaos is all the opportunities it offers to do some really weird conversions, particularly on Mutants and Chaos Spawn.
This conversion was inspired by Tony Ackland's excellent illustration on page 119 of the Realm of Chaos: Slaves to Darkness book under the '291-305 Crossbreed' entry on the Personal Attributes Table.
It's been quite a while since I finished this miniature, I've used him in games of Mordheim, WFRP, Quest and Skirmish, infact you may have spotted this creature in some of my photographs of our Dungeon games before, I've been meaning to post something about it for ages.
The legs and the hand holding the sword are from the plastic Mordheim Mercenaries sprue. The lower half of the torso is made from a trimmed down Plastic Skeleton's ribcage this was then pinned to a slightly miscast Copplestone Giant spider which I had trimmed a few legs off and sawn off the back half of the abdomen. An arm from the Zombie sprue was then pinned to the spider body in place of one of the legs and the whole thing was blended together with Green Stuff. Having a metal spider pinned atop the plastic legs made the miniature very top-heavy so I weighted the base with a coin to make sure it stood up.
When it came to painting I had no real point of reference for the creature's colours as it was based on a black and white illustration. In the end I decided purple would look good on the spider parts blended out toward more fleshy colours on the still-human parts. Originally I was going to do the legs all in browns, but in the end I went for blue on the trousers to draw a little attention to the human aspects of the creature and of course purple and blue are Tzeetch's colours which seemed appropriate on such as heavily mutated creature. The spider eyes where painted in reds and given a coat of gloss varnish to make them stand out from the purple.
