Spectral Reaper Conversions

Here are 2 Spectral Reapers I finished recently in what has been a rather productive week for me in the painting and modelling department.

The model on the left started out life a HeroQuest skeleton and was converted into a Spectral Reaper to increase the number I could field in an encounter (by a grand total of 1). I trimmed away the skeleton's legs and lower body using clippers and a modelling knife, I then used some iron wire to pin it a couple to centimetres above a base covered in textured plasticard. The ethereal lower body of the creature was then built up around the wire using thin rolled out 'sausages' of green stuff which were then worked into shape using my sculpting tools to mimic the details on the original Black Tree Design models.

 ^ Both models before painting

The 2nd model is one of Black Tree Design's 'Spectres' that has had it's scythe replaced with a massive 2-handed sword from a Reaper Miniatures accessory pack. I'd had this conversion planned for years - since 2004 in fact - when, while working at Black Tree I came across a miscast of this model that was missing it's scythe and thought it would look cool re-armed with a sword. The pommel of the sword is in fact the head of a map-pin I used (literally and with no pun intended) to pin the sword into place. I suppose this model is now more a 'Spectral Swordsman' than a 'Spectral Reaper' but in game terms it makes no difference, although it does make a nice leader type for the others.

Both models were painted in exactly the same way as the 3 Spectral Reapers I painted before and I won't repeat myself here despite how easy it would be to just copy and paste the text from a previous post.

Ah it's getting toward the end of the post and that means bonus picture time - here's some pictures of the Spectral Reapers I painted previously in action …

^A Wizard, Dwarf, Barbarian and Halfling find them selves under attack

^3 Reapers burst forth from the surface of a magic pool

 ^Looting tombs awakens angry spirits

It amuses me that you guys still haven't figured out the best way to deal with ethereal monsters and just beg for blessed and enchanted weapons

I hope we all have as much fun with my next planned batch of 'new' monsters ...

Re: Spectral Reaper Conversions

Well, I keep asking for silver daggers.

Once I got that, I'm sorted.

#1 Silver alone won't harm an Ethereal creature

#2 There is certain tactic which always gets overlooked when facing Spectral Reapers

Re: Spectral Reaper Conversions

Masturbation, I know. But you'd all complain about necrophillia if I did that every time.

You promised me that silver was good.

Nope, the Crossbow Bolts you guys found in the chest at the start of the 'Hall of the Werewolves' adventure had another property to them besides just being Silver, which allowed Mark to use them to destroy the Spectral Reapers you encountered in the magic pool chamber

Really like your conversion (and obviously your paint job!), dude! Simple but really effective!

A better way to kill them? Mmmh... I really don't know too!
Turn a character into ethereal form too?
Cure wounds on the undead?
Attack using fire?
Suggest stuff to your players?
+ Other planes lie beyond the reach Of normal sense and common roads But they are no less real Than what we see or touch or feel. +

Re: Spectral Reaper Conversions

Yes those are what you want to use - but it's not so much the attacks you've got (or haven't got) but the tactics you guys were using
