Here's a few more Chaos Mutants for your viewing pleasure (or possible displeasure – I've been told my conversions can be quite disturbing) was going to make this 3 posts but I thought I put them all in together
The Main body of the Snakeman Mutant consists of Citadel Plastic Zombie arms and torso, plus a severed head from the same sprue. The tail is in fact a tentacle from the old Chaos Mutations Sprue , pinned to the torso with a short length of iron wire, Green Stuff was used to blend this to the torso and sculpt extra warts/scales over the zombie parts to match the 'tail'. The tentacle had a bracer around it to which I attached a piece of cheap jewellery chain to make it into a manacle, suggesting the creature had been imprisoned and chained up, the miserable expression on the face went nicely with this idea too. Finally I armed him with a bow from the Mordheim Accessories Sprue and gave him a quiver from the very old Skeleton Hoards set and added a strap made of Green Stuff.
I chose a dirty blue/grey colour for the skin, inspired by the appearance of
Medusa in the Ray Harryhausen Clash of the Titans film (quite a few of Ray Harryhausen's monsters have this kind of colouring). For the eyes I went for yellow to contrast with the skin, they are painted to appear as if they are slightly glowing, further adding to the theme that he was imprisoned underground for a long time. Perhaps he only had some minor mutation at first, for which he was imprisoned, tortured and left to die slowly, but he survived eating a foul diet of whatever vermin he shared his prison with and over time his mutations further evolved before he was able to escape, or was set free ...
This guy is a rather old Chaos Warrior, though he's a little small and lightly armoured to be a Chaos Warrior by today's standards, but he makes for a great mutant! I use this miniature to represent the 'Spines' mutation and he was originally intended to be part of my Possessed warband in Mordheim, but nowerdays sees the most use in dungeon games. No conversion work here, the model is completely unaltered. The shape of the head reminded me of a Bloodletter (minus the horns) so I chose a 'Khornate' colour-scheme for the miniature; muted reds for the skin and simple browns for the leather, with mottled browns and greys on the furs. I think the sculptor originally intended the 'head' to be an ornate hermit, but in my mind it looks too organic, so I painted it as part of the creature. The spines and metal were all done the usual way I do them and finally I painted the Chaos Rune for the Long Spines mutation onto the shield (See Realm of Chaos: Volume 2, The Lost and the Damned – Page 83)
And finally, 2 Nurgle mutants! The one of the left is a Festering Spirit from Reaper Miniatures, re-based and armed with a cleaver from a HeroQuest Orc. This model is used to represent the Bloated and Diseased mutations. Unlike a lot of my Nurgle creature I painted the skin in normal human skin tones, using mixtures of Dwarf Flesh, Bronzed Flesh and Elf Flesh, followed by a watered down Flesh Wash. The tares in the flesh (and the nipples hehe) were picked out in Tentacle Pink and Dwarf Flesh and the innards were painted in Scab, highlighted up through Red Gore and Blood Red and given shaded using Baal Red and Red Ink. The cloth was painted using mixtures of Catachan Green, Camo Green and some of the green Foundation paints, this got a wash of Devian Mud to make it look grubby. I then used different colour glazes and inks to pick out the various warts, pustules and boils, Vomit Brown and Bad Moon Yellow for the eyes and picked out the maggots in Snakebite Leather, Bubonic Brown and Griffone Sepia. The nails were painted using a variation on my normal bone technique, adding a little yellow to the mix and finally giving them a wash of Griffone Sepia for an unhealthy yellow colouring. The cleaver was a rather more simple affair, my usual wood technique for the handle and my usual metal technique on the blade, with a few different brown washes over it to keep with the grubby appearance of the rest of the model.
The Extra Arm mutant on the right is another model based around plastic zombie parts and is quite old now (I think some of you may have seen it before) I trimmed down the neck of the zombie torso and attached a Kroot arm in place of the head. With the neck taken up with the extra arm I had no place for the head, so I cut the back from a zombie head and used green stuff to blend it to the torso. The axe and shield are from the plastic marauder sprues. It's been along time since I painted this, but it probably received similar treatment to the mutant on the right
