PROJECT: home molding meltas and shotguns (updated)

at Partizan 2011 last month i dropped on a SHITLOAD of necromunda weapons sprues. unfortunatley lots of sprues, all different. but one sprue caught my eye: melta guns... but a stubby, more compact design that i really liked. i had two but i wanted more, ideally 6 in total. so i remembered this thing a guy said to me about instant mold... so i embarked on a journy.

instant mold shotgun
the two halves of my two part mold for the necromunda shotguns

instant mold lego press
my lego press. after experimentation i discovered it was to deep.

instant mold melta guns
instant mold copies of melta guns. the lighter green one was too badly mixed and split down the middle

instant mold shotgun and meltagun

while its not the "silver bullet" id hoped for, it is an ok way to get yourself some extra bits. the shotguns are pretty good, and the meltas are "just about ok" but i think they will clean up through painting.

as a PS though... the more you do it the better you get. check these pistols...

instant mold auto guns

they are fucking PERFECT............

painted models to follow one day soon.

Re: PROJECT: home molding meltas and shotguns

in addition, on all the othe rmeltas i have cut the hand off the gun and used the plastic one. its easier and looks better. also, everything looks much better base coated.

Re: PROJECT: home molding meltas and shotguns

its actually really simple...

first you build a press as small as possible. 4x3 in lego is ideal. use flat lego tiles to line the press and the bottom of the press.

get a bowl with ALMOST boiling water in.

cut your Instant mold stick in half

drop both bits into hot water

wait a few seconds, then take ONE half out and place in the bottom of the press

spread it with your fingers and then push the top press hard into it to level it off

remove press and before it cools push your original into the gel so it is half buried.

leave to cool. (40 seconds ish- blow on it) but DO NOT TAKE OUT OF PRESS

when cool fish the second half out the water and place on top of the originals and push it with your thumb

get the press peg and push it like fuck either by hand or in a vice

go have a wank or a cuppa

when cooled remove (to avoid stressing the mould take the lego to bits round it)

pop it in half and remove the original

fill both sides of the mould with GS in little bits, making sure all the detail is filled

fill both sides to "just over"

put bottom in press, then put top in

put press pegin and push like fuck

leave for several hours

takeit to bits, trim flash. viola!

... I hate it when you ignore obvious things, then see them working..

I was concerned that filling two halfs with greenstuff and pushing them together might fail.. I'll have to give that a go. >.>

Good work, though! I like the pistols :3

as long as you LEAN on the fuckers while its still sticky the GS will bond well. iv not used a clamp or vice or anything on these... i just trusted to xenu and it panned out.

Greenstuff should bond to more greenstuff better than it does to anything else.

I do rather like the look of instamould, I can see myself using it for a few things (doing proper moulds of small stuff is a pain in the ass). I'm still wondering if it'd take the heat of coldcast resin....some experimenting may have to be done I think.

Did you try to re-cast an entire miniature?
