this is a bit of a tough one for me. you see, it has been noted that my style and skill has been developing and my more recent models have by far outshone my older stuff.
this is a problem, obviously. especiialy now that i hardly ever game, so im pretty much just a hobby/painter now days. so im revisiting my older models and bringing them up to scratch- which is a bit bittersweet actually, as the one iv just finished is my
first ever tank, a chimera, bought when i still had a Saab Turbo.
it used to look like this:
sorry these are the only pics i have- this tank has been a ginger stepchild for a long timeessentially just "AF(R) Orange" with a stupid guy in the cupola and shit decals and... well, lets just say its my first ever tanks, right?
so, firstly there was some housekeeping to do. the decals were scrapped off (id been very sparing with the varnish) liitle things like the heavy bolter, canvas roll, the drivers hatch and luckily the cuppola just popped off. the skull motif on some of my very early models popped off too, but left a blank bit of plastic that i couldnt really touch up. sometimes the fact i only have "AF(R) Orange" in a spray can causes problems!!
first job- drybrush the hull. first with vomit brown to highlight, then boltgun metal to dirty up and give the "sandbox" look. then the new cuppola was sprayed along with the drivers hatch and fitted and brushed to match. then, the glass obs ports were painted mechrite red, highlighted with solar orange, chaos black and space wolves grey- topped with aardcoat.
a new canvas roll was painted, this time in a colour more suited to the desert (see my other chimeras bright green one- yeas i know....)
decals were placed to match the other chimera as much as possible and general touching up and tarting up was done with inks and stuff. a new heavy bolter was fitted from the Manticore kit.
front and rear quarter viewsclose up of the heavy bolter, canvas roll and driver hatch windowdetail of the sides- im very happy with the scrollclose up detail of turretwell, thats about it. if you look at the two chimeras next to each other they really are similar but different- just enough to look realistic. im much much happier with this tank than i used to be- and im really pleased stuff that was shit on it like the cuppola and the drivers hatch popped off so easily. iv now got to do the same to a Leman Russ and also tart up another Demolisher. as ever, pics to follow.
