While recouperating from the severe mauling he got in the outskirts of Snakefish Central City, Rondo Van Xur was asked by the Planetary Warmaster, Hiram Enchinal, to find out why several scheduled deliveries of much needed equipment and vehicles from the local forge world, Thorforge, were late.
Rondo traveled there and landed his shuttle directly on the roof of the factory complex assigned to the campaign. Within seconds he was arrested and held hostage by the workers, who were currently in the middle of a rebellion caused not by Chaos infiltrators but as a reaction to the terrible working conditions at the plant (Rondo later discovered a plague had begun in the workers Hab-Blocks, vaccines had been sent but were being used first on the ruling classes- who never even came in to contact with any infection. It was estimated over 2000 children and 800 adults died during the outbreak and many more were left so weak they could not work- essentially a death sentence in itself).
Seeing that while sympathetic to their cause, Rondo was first and foremost concerned with the supplies he needed. He was also ver aware he needed to get away from the factory before the Imperium realised the problem and sent troops in to exterminate the strikers- and anyone else within.
For many weeks Rondo was held in a store room in an old part of the factory, long disused. in the store room was a strange artifact, unnoticed by the workers... an A.I system, damaged but fixable. after tinkering with it he was able to activate the device and form a relationship with it, a female personality calling itself Persophone.
the Machine began to fancy itself besotted with Rondo and he began to be concerned by not only the device but with the imminent retalliation he expected. he decided to escape, and after forcing his way out into the corridor he came face to face with Colonel Sigue Volta and his own bodyguard, Ogryn/Sgt. Everard Punch- they had formed a rescue party when he was overdue.
The news was bad- the factory was under siege by a PDF from a local agri-world and Storm troopers had been alerted from nearby Terra itself. Guided by the A.I device and fighting factory workers all the way, the group made their way deeper into the oldest sections of the factory Hive.
As Everard forced closed some huge blast doors behind them they realised they were in a huge, empty underground tank hanger, miles square. the made their way to a far corner, still directed by the A.I device. There, under a thick canvas cover the discovered a chimera APC with a configuration none of them had seen before. It bore the chassis number X000,001 and Persephone identified it as the original prototype of the Chimera, and "she" was the machine spirit of it, removed after it was realised mass produced vehicles would not include one.
Rondo's men worked on the vehicle, finding it needed hardly any repairs- its metals were free of corrosion, its fuel system was sealed and primed and there was even ammunition in the storage bins- this was indeed a special vehicle. Obviously forgotten about in the hetic days after the Heresy, this was the only Chimera built from the actual STC plans... each one coming after using a simplified, dumbed down version.
Persephone was re-fitted by Rondo himself and she drove them out through the access ramps from the underground depot and up behind the besiging forces.
Safe, the small team of men, one Ogryn and the Chimera returned to Snakefish where Persephone became Rondo's command transport during the rest of the hostilities there. All that time "she" refused any paint on "her" bare metal, which refused to corrode, keeping the same dull bronze finish, and would accept only the very bare minimum of identifying marksPersephone has the same minimum ID decals as any tank in the 349th, but that is as far as it goes. they are as small and unobtrusive as possible, apart from the ID number on the turret which shows the vehicle AI is proud to be a part of the AF(R). The white skull indicates it is part of the HQ motorpool. due to the dark nature of the hull, the Black Skull device has been placed on a white background.
It is fitted with a specialist sensor and comms suite, heavy flamer and an autocannon. In reality i am pretty pleased with my self on this model... the glass effects are a bit of an experiment and I am well chuffed at how they came out. im gonna say it- this is my best model ever.
it is, like many of my models, a bit of a frankenstein... the main vehicle is an old chimera, with a space marine cupolla and a Tau sensor box. the main weapon is a barrel from the standard infantry autocannon, fitted over the cut off multimelta mount. the spotlight is from a new sentinel. the idea for the autocannon ammo hopper on the side of the turret comes from the Forge World resin model. it is part of the cadian autocannon team.
the lasgun hole covers are from the drop-pod kit. I fucking hate the lasguns and as i wanted this model to be "special" i didnt use them.
the hooks and smoke pods are from the chaos rhino sprue. i was worried it would make it look a little big chaos-y so i made sure there were highly visible Imperial idents. the decals are purposefully discreet and deffo "less is more"
it was sprayed matt black with a drybrush of tin bitz. the glass effect is the dark red from the foundation set, the solor orange from the same set is the highlight with chaos black and space wolves grey for the light spec. the spotlamp is a real puzzle as i hate painting them and normally cock them up. Necron abyss with enchanted blue in a swirl, with hawk turquoise highlight and a flash of bleachedbone. all portholes and the spotlamp have at least one layer of 'ardcoat.
the details on the vehicleare picked out in burnished gold with mithril silver and boltgun metal used for highlights and to draw attention to different areas.
