More Fimir Painted

They are sub-human creatures who live in swamps, make foul pacts with Daemons and rely on kidnapping and ritualistic rape for reproduction - but enough about what bible-belt Americans think of D&D players, here's a bunch of my Fimir!

Apart from a rather battered old Dirach I'm restoring all the Troops and Character in the Fimir Warband I'm slowly working on are based on the classic HeroQuest Fimir (which thanks to owning many copies of HQ I have dozens of!), so I'm having do a little conversion work to get as much variety out of the minis as possible.

The Fimir Champion (or "Fianna Fimm") has been re-armed with a HQ Orc's Sword and Given an old Citadel Shield with an equally old plastic skeleton boss to fill the hole. It's tale has been carefully repositioned and given a 'blade' end made from an Orc spear-tip.
The Fimir on the bottom left has had it's axehead swapped out for one from a 2nd edition 40k Ork Warrior
The one on the left of the final picture has a HQ Chaos Warrior's axehead and a slightly repositioned tail, while the final Fimir is completely stock.

As for painting, the description in WFRP1 says “their hides are smooth and leathery, and colour varies from buff to a light olive green” so I decided to experiment with different combinations of Karnoc Green, Camo Green, Catachan Green and Gretchin Green for the skin on each figure. The Champion came out far far lighter than I intended so I used several layers of Green Glaze and Thraka Green Wash to try and rescue it make it darker - it didn't quite turn out the way I wanted it do and thus he doesn't quite match his fellow Fimir Warriors

Fans/owners of HeroQuest will also note that all the above Fimir have been re-based on 25mm round bases with textured plasti-card - this is done by carefully sawing the integral base away from the model's feet using a very sharp razor-saw (trying not to damage the figure in the process). I then take a piece of plasti-card of the desired texture and lay it textures side down and pick a few bases I want to add texture to. The top surface of the bases are coated in Liquid-poly and placed firmly down onto the back of the plasti-card, once the Liquid-poly has set I use a tough pair scissors and my modelling-clippers to trip down the excess plasti-card to the edge of the base. The miniatures are then mounted on their new bases using more Liquid-poly

Future plans for my Fimir include some extreme conversions to make warriors with 2-handed weapons and a few Boglars (Swamp Goblins/Marsh Gnoblars) as slaves and cannon fodder types. I may also purchase a few of Blood Moon Miniatures's 'Bog Raiders' to use as Leaders and Champions

Re: More Fimir Painted

Awesome! I was just wondering about those bases when I read the last part.
Do you have a picture of that "plasti-card"? Don't know what that is really.

I'd like a way to add tile-like textures to my HQ bases, if possible without "dismounting" the miniatures. Perhaps some modelling putty, spread thinly on top of them, and tracing lines with a paperclip or knife point?

Looking forward to seeing that Dirach restored. Oh btw: I'm going to paint my Fimir roughtly the same, but with bone tips on their tails (like you did their toe-nails).
And those Bog Raiders are also very cool!

Plasti-card is used in all kinds of modelling and can be purchased from the kinds of shops that sell Airfix kits and Model Train-sets. Normal smooth Plasti-card comes in various thickness-s from paper thin to 3mm or more and is useful for vehicles and some buildings - Textured Plasti-card (pictured above) is very thin but comes in all kinds of textures which simulate Bricks, Stone, Plate-Metal, Rivets and all kinds of materials and is very useful for adding texture to flat surfaces (like the tops of bases or the walls and floors of a terrain piece) to make them more interesting

yes I've seen that sort of thing done - I found this picture on Google a little while back

^this Orc's base appears to have been covered with a thin layer of Miliputt (or maybe Green Stuff) and shaped with modelling tools to look like floor stones

the only problem I can see with this is that the miniature's feet may become obscured by the layer of putty and may look like it's 'sinking into the floor' (some set of HeroQuest minis already have very low profile feet to start with) - Another alternative is do what Marchomer did and paint a flag-stone texture onto the bases

cool I look forward to seeing your paint jobs!
I'm planning to add a few bone-spikes to the tail ends of my that Fimir I'm converting to hold 2 handed weapons

You've inspired me to dig out my rank and file fimir and start painting them up. I'll be trying the armour colour scheme you suggested, but I've also added some WGF Burnished Copper (Darkest shade) to the edges of the plates. Will post pics once they are done (and I get around to setting up the photo rig!)

excellent, I look forward to seeing how your ones come out, will you be using the same skin tones you used on your Meargh?

Only the Meargh will have that skin tone, since she is very ancient. (I seem to recall I used Vallejo Intermediate Blue, Pale Blue and Bluegrey for her).

As you point out, the Fimir show a variety of skin tones and this can be seen in the current batch -dark to medium greens and from dark brown to a tanned flesh. Each one is actually a different colour at the moment but when I get the Bog raiders assembled some of the tones will be more in the majority.

You probably know this already, but Warpstone 25 is full of stuff on the Fimir, including many ideas of creatures and demons that might be found allied or bound to a Fimir rading force or army.

Great job.
Especially for the conversions. It doesn't seem that there are modifications in the converted miniatures. All of them seems to be "out of box". I really like the shield too.

Concerning the bases, I forget I've recently painted some Chaos Warriors. It seems I've used textured plasticard for the bases, but I only used little tiles. This kind of tiles are used to make sloping roofs

(I will post the Chaos Warriors soon)
