Lava Pools

So I've finally got round to painting up some of the stuff I got from Scotia Grendel!

Lava Pools

Here's the Lava Pools. They were fun to paint and I'm rather pleased with how they turned out.
For the rock I wanted a distinct 'volcanic' look, so I used dark greys (mainly Adeptus Battlegrey and Codex Grey with a little Chaos Black Mixed in) with a wash of Devlan Mud and the more gravel-y looking bits were given a light dry-brush with a few browns to pick them out.
The rock crystals were given a base coat of Storm Blue and highlighted up through Festering Blue, Enchanted Blue and Ice Blue up to a 50/50 mix of Ice Blue and Skull White along the edges.
I built the lava colour up from Mechrite Red through Blood Angels Red up to Firey Orange, then I gave it a wash of water-down Orange Ink and a final highlight of Firey Orange. While I was doing the final few layers I gave the rock around the lava a highlight with the same colours to give a glowing effect. Finally the rock crystals were given 2 coats of Gloss Varnish.

I think they are very good but the lava could look better with a hint of GW Blood red & bad moon yellow?Perhaps the photograph does not do it justice? It seems too orangy?Pull a link off the net on real lava & then tell me what you think?I do not mean to offend, just call it as I see it-please do the same for me.

Re: Lava Pools

Agreed, it doesn't look too much like real lava, it ended up looking more like boiling soup in the end, but I'm happy with the result (my miniatures tend to have a dark tone to them)

I used a few pictures of lava flows for reference while I was painting as I was going for a (as Mr Babble puts it) "darkly cooling" look - the theory being that in real life lava is so hot that you can't get near it, while in fantasy and/or sci-fi people build castles, temples and spaceports directly into/on top of active volcano. The crystals at the side of these pools also imply that the lava cooled to quite some degree. Yea the lava will still burn your characters to death on contact, but they can still get relatively close to it without too much harm coming to them.

Re: Lava Pools

I understand now, wargaming can lend itself more to a fantasy/creative interpretation of whats seen in nature, the nearest I came to that was painting Dc comic characters..........................The reason I checked out the lava pools,is what I put in my email-to stand the Dr Who 'Inferno' alien on(the ones that came out of the earths core-Jon Pertwee 1970's),I would like to buy a couple, are they GW?The blue crystals were spot on & the pool did have a warm glow,I have to learn when to leave a model alone as I tend to overdo things.
