MMP shall be the new game. It requires asking someone who can force their way into Morts' living quarters/ model-space-sharing place to look over his lovely model collection and having them pick 5 models.
This will happen once a month. And the forums will vote for the one he is forced to paint next. Who likes the idea? Perhaps the first months models can be picked by his lovely ladyfriend!

I love this idea!! It's fab, though I would probably stipulate one rule, so that Mort isn't completely tied to painting all the lovely large mini's that he has as those would obviously be first choice for most peeps - one rule whereby within the five mini's chosen only one can be a larger mini - the rest having to be character mini's which could be used in play.
Hopefully that makes sense. And I shall always force him to paint anyhow as he's unleashed the painting monster within me and for me to paint I need him to paint (to offer constructive critisism). |

I'm up for this - but I can't promise results all the time
also lets face it I'm not the only forum member who could do some more painting - we all need this everyone here should paint more miniatures and ...

Well, for my part I plan to take my elven archers and paint each of them to a different stage, line them up and take a photo displaying the different stages. This will be more of a reference to myself than anything else, but I'll stick it up on the forum for comments - always useful to know at what stage of the process I could hone some skill.
Of course, after the photo is taken they will all be painted up for use in Skirmish or some other game. |

I'd be up for some sort of monthly painting competition/on-going get stuff done competition. I've got plenty of models that need painting that's for sure.

I suppose we could all throw our hats in with a couple of models each.
Hmm.. Perhaps we give him these goals on the condition that we force ourselves to spend the month after a completed model, painting up a full squad/ character etc. And then posting them D:<

Here's an idea!
In order to vote, we must propose a single model of our own that we MUST paint in the same month, or forfiet the next chance to vote! It could be any single model, or a pair if they are small-than-man sized models like goblins or dogs etc etc. Agreed? :3

It's a good idea, but it's going to take a small amount of organization - along as you're willing to adjudicate the thread and tally the votes I don't see a problem

If we can gather up some more people who're willing to be regularly here to vote and throw their own models into the ring, happily.
Hell perhaps at the same time as model voting, we could bring together all the painted models people did and vote for the best!

I think it needs pointing out here that the size of a model has very little to do with how long it will take to paint or how difficult it will be take the following examples ^One of OtherWorld's classic D&D style Trolls, large and very nice model - but once you've painted the skin he's almost finished and it's just a matter of working on the claws, teeth, eyes, tongue and hair ^This sorceress chick for Reaper however is lot a smaller, but covered in all different details all needing individual attention and would take much longer to paint because of it

Well, you make an undeniable point. Perhaps we'd need to leave it a bit up to someones' personal discretion.

yeah - okay.
You make a fair point that it's the level of detail which determines how long the model will take to paint. In my defence, I have only been doing this a short time. And yes - I realise that excuse will only hold up for so long. |
I'd be happy to join in with this, I find very often if I'm painting I can rope Mort into painting too (although I do have an unfair advantage being his housemate!).
I need to paint more myself as the pile of unpainted stuff is ever growing so some sort of painting competition could only be for the collective good. |
A forum painting competition! Nice idea!
If we did this, should there be categories/guide-lines? and how frequent would they be; weekly, monthly, quarterly or annual? How would we vote? It might be spreading ourselves a bit thinly to have loads of options to begin with. You could start with limiting it to one category, then add more depending on peoples response and enthusiasm. I think that monthly or quarterly might be good, as if they were too frequent, there might be too few entries. The best from the year could then go through to an annual round-up. We could even do a TLaTD prize Any thoughts? Like everyone else, I've got loads of models that need painting, and this could give me the impetus to get started again. |

Monthly sounds best.
We really need more people seeing this and showing interest, though. D:

I was thinking maybe a monthly competition with the winners scoring points to win fabulous tLatD swag possibly with the winners announced at Day of the Damned. I was thinking maybe only have: single miniature, large miniature (28mm tanks and bigger) and maybe group (so squad through to whole army). Obviously there might be some debate as to what fits in where (i.e. a Flames of War tank would count in the single miniature category in my eyes) but I don't think it'd need to much clarification. Winners of each category get 3 points runner up 1 point. I'd say have the entire month for painting with voting being opening on the last day of the month and ending one week from that day. We'd have an entry thread for each month where only entries may be posted (perhaps with a 3 photo limit perhaps 5 for the group category), one entry per category per person. Then a voting thread would go up at the end of the month where everyone could vote and comment on the entries obviously with links to the entries threads. These would obviously get locked on their respective closing dates. I'd probably have a 'hall of fame' sticky thread with all the winners and the current points totals in the first post. Guess Mortis and myself should really decide some rules and get this set up. I don't mind running it myself. Anyone have any problems with the system I've laid out? Its based on a system that was on a forum (for hand made gutiars) I used to go on that seemed to work very well. |
I like this system
The only problem I could foresee is the single mini category having lots of entries, and the tank-sized category having only a couple, giving those people who paint big things less competition for their points. Were you thinking there would be a separate award for each category? What do you think about getting it started for October? |

That sounds about right. Perhaps a squad/ unit category, too.
And perhaps a "Paint a silly marine" where we can pick silly schemes for the silliest army available e_e And a conversion contest..

I guess this is true, but perhaps that's fair enough for those who have spent the extra time and money on doing a bigger model? Depends on how others feel. I was thinking more like a 1st, 2nd and 3rd for overall points, prevents any single person winning more than one award and means that everyone gets a chance to win the top prize even if they only paint stuff for one particular category. I'm happy to do so but I'd like to hear what Mortis has to say about it all, especially as he'd need to set up the subforum for the posts (pretty sure I can't do that at the moment nabble keep messing with what privileges mods get). I keep thinking about having squad/unit as its own category but I think just having 'group of minis' as category prevents any 'is this an army, horde or squad' kind of discussions. Either its a single mini or its multiple minis, simple. Perhaps but I'd run that separate from a painting competition as comparing the two is a little silly. EDIT: Had a chat with Mortis about it all and things seem to be all good. He's suggested voting be every other month to allow for more entries, I think that's a great idea. Unless anyone else has any other massive complaints I'll write up a more formal and clear version of the rules. |
