Here's a HeroQuest Barbarian I finished painting recently. The conversion work on this figure was simple but IMHO rather striking - this particular Barbarian had a broken sword so I cut off the remains of the blade with a pair of clippers and used a needle file to clean out the area where the blade goes into the hilt. I then took the 'rune sword' from a Chaos marauder sprue and trimmed and filed away it's hilt so that the blade would fit neatly into the empty hilt on the Barbarian model. as with all HeroQuest models I've worked on this Barbarian has been re-based on a 25mm round base with textured plasti-card added to the surface.
The paint job was a fairly simple affair too, the entire model first received an all over dry brushing with 3 increasingly lighter shades of brown, then the flesh was painted in a thin layer of P3 Bloodtracker Brown followed by Citadel Bronzed flesh (thin layers allowing me to maintain the shading of the dry brushing beneath) I then used Citadel Ogryn Flesh Wash to enhance the shading and worked a little Devian Mud Wash into the deep recesses and between the fingers. The hair was painted in Bubonic Brown, highlighted with a 50/50 mix of Bubonic Brown and Bleached Bone and then washed with Citadel Griphone Sepia Wash (blonde hair of course being a nod to Arnold Schwarzenegger as Conan) Leather bits such as the belt and boots were painted Snakebite Leather and washed with Chestnut Wash and the fur was left as the initial dry brushing. The metal studs on his belt were picked out in MP Bronze and then Boltgun Metal. The Sword was painted Tinbitz and then Boltgun metal and washed with Citadel Asurmen Blue Wash, I then highlighted the runes, hilt details and the edge of the blade with Chainmail. For the next HeroQuest barbarian I do, I think I will sculpt bracers around his wrists and maybe a head band too because I felt I ran out of interesting details to paint on the body and had to keep the painting on sword simple so as not to unbalance the look of the model.
The new rune-covered sword was intended to represent Spirit Blade artefact weapon from the original Quests that came in the HeroQuest boxed game. I've recently been using this model as my Barbarian character in Warhammer Quest who in his first game gained an Enscocered Blade so the magical-looking sword fits in nicely with that too.
The bonus pictures you might have seen before but here they are again - The Barbarian and the 3 other original HeroQuest characters, converted and re-based prior to painting. Hopefully soon I'll have the other 3 painted too!
