It's been a while, but I'm painting and modelling again! A short while ago Messy gave me a casting of one of the
Super Mutant bodies he's been sculpting, based on the monsters from the Fallout computer games. Here's what I did with it ...
Rather than Fallout, I was influenced by another computer game, namely Dragon's Dogma (which has become a favourite of mine in part due to it's gorgeous bestiary of monsters) and used the body to create a huge humanoid armed with a massive hammer - inspired by the Eliminators from the 'Dark Arisen' expansion.
+Conversion+
I began with a little GreenStuff work to add a belt and making the shorts appear more ragged, I did at one point consider completely re-sculpting the shorts into a skirt, but I was unable to make it look convincing. Next I added an armoured loincloth type piece cut from a GW Ogre's Gut-plate and trimmed to fit. The huge belt buckle piece is the top of a banner pole from a 90's plastic Space Ork Warbike. Next I began work on the arms which came from a the rider of a plastic Orc chariot, originally holding a long spear. I cut the spear shaft away above the right hand and replaced it with an Ogre's hammer to turn it into a 2 handed hammer, the head of spear and a considerable length of the shaft was cut away from the the other end and a spike from a Wargames Factory Orc weapon added. As you can see the plastic Orc arms work well in proportion to Super Mutant body and although I had plenty to choose from in my bits box, these were the only ones I could find holding a 2 handed weapon. Getting the arms on was quite a tricky process and required quite a bit of trimming, filing and filling of both the arms and the body, the excess GreenStuff from this was used to bulk out and texture the spear-shaft to better match the Ogre hammer.
The large helmet came from an old plastic Chaos Warrior sprue and the chaos-star medallion I believe came from a plastic Juggernaut of Khorne sprue.
The base is a standard 30mm round Warmachine style base with some plastic flagstones added along with a skull and some GreenStuff to make the dirt.
+Painting+Once the last piece of GreenStuff had set it was time begin painting, I was going to take a picture of the figure before I painted it, so you could see all the conversion work laid bare, but I suddenly found myself brushing on a black undercoat of Army Painter Matt Black (I don't use spray cans for undercoating miniatures).
Once the undercoat was dried, inspected for spots I'd missed, touched up and then inspected and touched up again, I began the browning stage I don't remember which 3 browns I used this time, but it doesn’t matter really (if you don't know what I mean by browning, go back and read some of my previous posts).
The skin was given a thin coat of Citadel Graveyard Earth and then Army Painter Tanned Flesh, this was given a wash of Army Painter Soft Tone Ink, then re-highlighted with a dry-brushing of Army Painter Tanned Flesh mixed with a little P3 Ryn Flesh.
The boots and belt were painted P3 Bootstrap Leather and then washed with Citadel Brown Wash
again I can't remember what colours I used on the shorts, but I suspect from looking at it now that Citadel Graveyard Earth and Bootstrap Leather were involved.
The stone bits (the hammer head and flagstones) were given a heavy dry-brushing of P3 Bastion Grey followed by Army Painter Uniform Grey and the gaps between tiles were lined with Citadel Devlan Mud.
The metal bits on the hammer and the plate mail were picked out with Army Painter Gun Metal and given a wash of Citadel Devlan Mud, while the helmet and belt buckle were painted P3 Molten Bronze, dry-brushed Citadel Dwaven Bronze and then a wash of Citadel Thrakka Green.
Finally the horns were painted Graveyard Earth, highlighted with Citadel Kommando Khaki and then P3 Menoth White Base, concentrating the highlights towards the top of the horns - the same paints were also used on the skull on the base
+After Thoughts+Despite being a bit out of practice with my miniature painting due to the house move and subsequent DIY work, I think my Eliminator turned out really nicely. I got to use it as a boss-monster in a game the day after I'd painted it and I'm pleased to say it gave my players a good scare.
One thing that may not come across in the pictures at the top is the size of the finished miniature ...
^
The model is near 50mm tall including the horns and thus towers over player character miniaturesRules and tactics wise it behaves in much the same manner as it's counterpart does in Dragon's Dogma delivering devastating sweeping attacks with it's massive hammer and pinning down hapless victims before bringing down the full weight of the hammer plus the creature's immense strength in a single crushing blow

An Eliminator from Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, which inspired the miniature. I suspect the name may be an attempt at a pun on “Minotaur” due to the bull-like helmet design (Ele-Minotaur?)Should Messy see his way to giving me another Super Mutant body to work from I'd love to create a second one of these and have 2 of them wandering around a dungeon. In the mean time I've 2 more Dragons Dogma inspired monsters I'm working on ...
