Went to see District 9 yesterday with my housemate. Very good film, first good film I’ve been to see this year, and it’s only 9 months into 2009!
Weta Workshop’s effects made for some very convincing Aliens, the story was well told through a documentary style without becoming another Clover Field, Diary of The Dead or (god help us) Blair Witch Project, and smoothly cuts to more traditional action scenes when the story requires it.
The parallels to/ overtones of South African politics (segregation, racisum, ect) are rather heavy (in fact their not so much overtones as a whole orchestra) but this doesn’t take anything away from the story.
If I have one gripe with the film it’s that there are clearly a lot of ‘deleted’ scenes, which we are not going to get to see until it’s on DVD (one scene that’s in the fucking TRAILER is in fact not in the cinema release) so even thought I’ve seen the film I kinda feel like I havn’t seen all of it yet …but I’ve kinda come to expect that from Peter Jackson really.
So, yea, go and see it!
