Creepy Crawlers

Here's 3 creatures I got from Scotia Grendel recently, they are sold together in a set of 3 as “Dungeon Crawlers” and are, as you can see very high quality resin miniatures.

Crawlers

1&2: The Gigantic Centipede was a nice model to paint. For the Carapace I used a base-coat of Scab Red, highlighted up through Red Gore to Blood Red, I then gave it wash of Baal Red and then worked some Badab Black into the recesses between the plates. I then highlighted the edges of the plates with a little more Blood Red.
For the head I wanted to use Terracotta, but my MK1 pot of Terracotta recently ran out and I discovered to my horror that Citadel had stopped making it (again). So I ended up having to mix up several shades of terracotta like colours using Mechrite Red and a paint called 'Terracotta' (from a different company) which was a much, much lighter shade. The Legs, Mandibles and the Spike on the tail were painted Graveyard Earth, highlighted up through Komando Karki to a 50/50 mixture of     Bleached Bone and Komando Karki. I painted the eyes Iyanden Darksun highlighted up to Badmoon Yellow and Sunburst Yellow, although I'm not sure if the eyes look right in yellow, so I might go back and paint them a dark blue instead.

3&4: The Slug-Leech was a much simpler paint job, the main body was painted Orkhide Shade and highlighted up through Knarloc Green up to a mixture of Camo Green and Goblin Green. The Slime was painted Dark Angels Green highlighted up through Snot Green to Goblin Green, given a wash of Green Ink and finally a layer of Green Glaze. The underneath of the creature was also given a coat of Green Glaze to make it different from the upper flesh. The Teeth were painted in the usual way I do bone and the like and the tongue was painted Gore Red highlighted up to Blood Red and given a glaze of Red Ink.

5: The 3rd creature, I have yet to paint because I'm not sure exactly what this creature is, Scotia Grendel's website says it's Lizard but the head doesn't look particularly lizard like and it's got chitinous looking plates down it's back and tail. If anyone has any suggestions as to what colours might look good on this creature and/or what exactly it is, I'd be interested to hear them. STOP PRESS! the 3rd creature is now painted Click Here or scroll way, way down to see it!

Re: Creepy Crawlers

Love the centipede, really nice model. If you're after terracotta you might want to try getting hold of some of the Vallejo paints, the game colour range is a copy of the citadel one and I just checked and they do a terracotta.

The slug thing looks like a pretty good generic 'wandering monster'.

Guess you could use the fat lizard thing as a squig or something, not that you're short of them.

What I'm planning to do is to buy Coat D'arms paints to replace my old Citadel colours as they run out, Coat D'arms is the nearest range you can get to Citadel because they used to make the paints in the MK1 pots.

Yea I've used it in games a few times now, I originally decided it was going to used it as a Nurgle creature (hence the colour scheme), but I've also used it as a Giant Chameleoleech and a variant on a Carrion Crawler.

I don't know about using the 3rd model as a Squig, it hasn't really got a very Squig-like feel to it and as you said I've got loads of Squigs to paint up besides. I'm toying with the idea of sculpting some scales onto it to make it more lizard like, but I'm not sure if that would work. I haven't as yet found anything like this creature in any of my Monster Manuals, Bestiaries, ect. The head kinda makes me think of a deep sea fish, I'll see where that idea takes me, but I'm still open to suggestions...

Re: Creepy Crawlers

Not enough legs and I'm not even sure it's really that lizard-like.
Plus I already have a very nice Basilisk from Reaper

After the well known D&D tradition of amalgamating two or more beasts into one fantastical creature of whimsey;

I hereby name creature number 3:

Scorpion Lizard

Re: Creepy Crawlers

Interesting, but not really that scorpion like either (however that does give me an idea for a different miniature)

3 & 4 remind me of the sandworms in Dune-the colouring/painting on the centipede is great. As for number 5 from what I can see it reminds me of the alien/species artist- Hans Geiger? or something.....I saw a lovely painted model from the Alien 3 film (with the long head) painted nutshell shiny brown & black, like a snails shell. The back is definitely like the alien creature-sorry cannot make out the face.It could be done in black & white but would be difficult.Needs finishing in varnish to give a shiny reptile shell appearance?Just a suggestion.I would be tempted to alter the mouth.

Re: Creepy Crawlers

I see what you getting at with the overlapping plates down the spine yea ... the old Citadel Hormagaunts from the 90's are a much better candidate for converting into Giger-esque Xenomorphs though all you'd need to do is replace the arms with the 'hand-ed' ones from a Genestealer

Hmm a nutshell like brown sounds interesting, it's not one of the colours I considered for this mini but I might just go with it. I can do black pretty well, but the one in the Painted Example picture on Scotia-Grendel's website is painted in shiny black and white but I've got to say I'm not that keen on it.

Details never show that well in photos of unpainted miniatures, the head is somewhat like that of a deep sea fish, with large overlapping fangs, I've got a second set of these to get painted up at and I'll probably be doing some conversion work on them, but the first ones will remain 'as stock'

Do I appear unpopular if I say that I like these colours?

OK, so it's been a frikkidikidinking long time but I've finally finished painting the 3rd creature!

The green fleshy bits make use of Privateer Press's Formula P3 Battledress Green and Traitor Green as well as Citadel Camo Green. The Claws and teeth got my regular bone method treatment, while the more yellow looking plates on the spine were built up from a base of Citadel Iyanden Darksun, through Bubonic Brown and a mixture of Bleached Bone and Sunburst Yellow to pure Bleached Bone before being re-shaded with Griphone Sepia Wash to bring the tone down. Griphone Sepia and Thrakka Green washes were also used to bring out the details on the head. The eyes are Iyanden Darksun highlighted up to Badmoon Yellow with a Badab Black Pupil

I still have no idea what to call this creature or how to use it in game, any suggestions?

This is my propose:

He is known as "The third Creature", he looks like a stupid lizard-like creature but actually he's the aspect of a powerful and poisonous demon-like creature. He has two brothers, more lucky than him concerning the look, but weaker than him. Each of them were trapped long time ago in a different dungeon by a famous Archmage.

(Obviously: great paintjob as always!)
