the day the pilot episode of Enterprise aired I was on holiday. In Newquay, or Possibly Weymouth. I dont know for sure but I was definatley there with Amy, a now ex girlfriend. thats relevant because she was a fucking bitch and wouldnt let me watch it- which when you think i am a fucking GEEK of Pottsie-like proportions that was a bit harsh. consequentially i never really got into the show... until i downloaded them all recently. I decided to make a bold statement on my facebook staus a few days ago: "Enterprise is amoung the best of Star Trek and Jonathan Archer is equal to any other Federation captain.... if not the superior" and i stand by it. it is recognizably Trek in many many ways but Archer and the crew are also very like us. They are not perfect. what i DO like about it is this crew is elite. this is the FIRST deep space ship earth has sent out- every officer and crewman are picked to fill each post because they are the best. the finest humanity has to offer. even the design of the ship is growing on me.i know a lot of geeks have slated it and i agree with them, but the lack of a secondary hull does make it feel more primitive as does the bare metal plates. however i still feel they should have used something more like this design: but the NX-01 is cool enough for me, even if it does cause a MASSIVE continuity error with a Voyager episode. (geek answers on a postcard please). i even like the theme song- the lyrics fit perfectly, the monatge is very good and its nice to see the Pheonix launch again. What makes this show is the characters tho. Archer is pig headed but also very smart and soemtimes sensitive- a man of action who without any doubt is enjoying every second out there in deep space. He embodies starfleets explorer/diplomat/warrior (in that order) ethos. Hoshi is cute, sexy but also very good at her job, a little bit over sensitive and has to grow into her role as explorer. and i like her for that. Mayweather is by far the most interesting character but is so underused its a crime. hes clever, compassionate and is much much more than just a helmsman. the fact he was born in space also adds to his character. Dr Phlox is a little bit comedic, but not annoyingly so. not part of starfleet but you can see where he and his role is heading in the future. they have NO prime directive, no USS Defiant to call on when some cunt needs phasering up, hardly use transporters, have weak armaments and constantly hammer the boundries of their technology- it is obvious there is much more potential in the Human race.... Some people also complain about how the Vulcans are shown in Enterprise to be unlikeable cocks. but i think that is all part of the greater plan. In this era Vulkans ARE cunts. arrogant, short sighted, closed minded. Humans are petulant, impulsive and illogical. They NEED each other like a symbiosis. once they become the core races in the federation the checks and balances of the personalities gel and each improve. i think. so if your like me and never really got into Enterprise, give it a chance. It has all the soap opera characterisations of Voyager (features i like actually) and all the moral questions you might expect from Next Gen. you even get some of the all out balls to the wall war that DS9 showed. I will say it again: "Enterprise is amoung the best of Star Trek and Jonathan Archer is equal to any other Federation captain.... if not the superior" and if you disagree ask yourself one question: Archer, Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway. one of these people went on the become THE FIRST PRESIDENT OF THE United Federation Of Planets. and as far as i know, only he and janeway were the only ones with dogs. wow that's a lot to take on board and rest assured there is a long reply coming from me, but before begin my long rant about how TNG is the best series ....
Kirk had a dog called Butler, I don't know dogs so I have no idea what breed he was (seen in Star Trek: Generations)

I've always disliked Enterprise for the massive numbers of things they change from the existing star trek continuity, stuff that was specifically mentioned in various series just gets thrown out the window by the writers. For instance, in the TOS episode "Balance of Terror", the first episode with the Romulans, its said that this is the first time an earth ship has seen a Romulan vessel since the war between earth and Romulus a century earlier. Despite that they turn up in Enterprise.
There are some good episodes and some good stories, they just don't really fit into the rest of star trek all that well. Doesn't have any of the charm that a lot of the rest of star trek does, I'd rate it above the early series of DS9 but that's about it. I do like some of the characters, Plox is ok, Reed is good fun if a little 2-dimensional. T'Pol is the only character for me that is really interesting, but even she's just a re-working of Spock. Commander Shran the lead Andorian character is also pretty cool. Archer isn't a bad captain, but he's more a Picard than a Kirk, he's got some balls but he's more a thinker than a man of action. I hate to contradict but no its not, its the first 'warp 5' ship that starfleet have sent out. There are plenty of earth ships deeper into space than Enterprise, like all the earth freighters they bump into, it just takes them a lot longer to get anywhere. There are plenty of mentions of ships launched by starfleet before the NX-01, which was launched nearly 100 years after the events of 'First Contact'. Butler is a great dane. Janeway's dog was called Mollie. |
