I'm looking at getting back into playing battle games. At some point I'm going to be trying "Fantasy Warriors" but for now will be playing Warhammer just to get back into it.
I have 6th edition and the army lists, so will be using that. My question is this. Where the stats for a model I am using isn't in the army book, is it better to look back editions, or to newer editions? So far the models are:- Empire war wagon: Can't find anything after 5th edition for this, so might have to adapt those rules. Ungrim Ironfist, the slayer king: I found some stats for him from 5th edition. Thorgrim Grudgebeare: This guy I found in 7th edition, but some of the runes he have don't exist, but seem to be compatible with 6th edition when I looked them up. Any advice appreciated. P.S. Will be posting pics of the armies at some point; Chaos, Dwarves, Empire and Dark Elves. Some are painted by a professional, some by me, and some not at all.

You do know WHFB is up to eight edition now? Essentially the same game, but some changes on magic mechanisms and wrapping around formations etc.
I have some PDFs of various source materials -let me know specifically which ones you think you need and where to send it. |

My advice is pick the edition your happiest with (if your army is 5th edition era use 5th) my own armies work best in 3rd, 4th and 5th edition after which I have to drop certain units and my Undead I have to spit into 2 smaller armies (Tomb Kings and Vampire Counts)
it also depends on which version your opponents are willing to play - so find out what/who you might be facing if you are determined to play in tournaments however you'll need to up to date with the latest edition (8th) - you may be able to 'counts as' some units, but unfortunately you'll probably have to drop a few things and (even worse) buy new units

I am aware it goes up to 8th edition thanks. However I refuse to pay good money to buy yet more rulebooks and army lists, I would rather use it to light a great big fat cigar. If they haven't got it right by the 6th edition, they're never going to get it right. I have the 6th edition books, so I'll use them, but with some modifications.
The wizbang link I saw, but its fan made, not official. That in itself isn't an issue, but I really dislike the way they went with it. The 5th edition one made more sense, just wanted opinions on whether it would still work in 6th edition. Mort, I would never enter a competition. For a start most of my minis aren't official or are old GW. Second I wouldn't play a game with less than 10,000 points, I cannot see the point as the game would be about the best army rather than any tactics. What I'm looking for is using the stuff I have in 6th edition and just adapting stuff from other editions where it doesn't exist. the people I'll be playing will be using the 4 armies I have, so there's no issue from that point of view. I'll be making up 4 good armies and letting people pick which ones they want to ensure balance.

I was going to send you the 8th edition PDF too

Hehe, thanks. I have access to the 8th edition PDFs, I'm not a big fan of electronic docs, I prefer something more solid. The offer is appreciated.
Also, was slightly exaggerating, 10,000 points make a good battle, but I really wouldn't play any less than 6,000.

well, the offer is there if you ever need something I have. My WFB Armies folder is at 2Gb and I also have a few Deadtree format too.

I'm not keen on tournaments either since competitive games are boring - but I would point out that not all tournaments are GW run and thus not so restrictive (THW runs tournaments every couple of months for instance) There's your answer then

Fair enough, but you guys probably run nothing anywhere near me :P
Ok, bearing in mind that these are armies I've not seen in ages, this is what I have so far:- Dark Elves: 6800 points approx. Hordes of chaos: 9500 points approx. Empire: tbc Dwarves: tbc Will look at the last 2 tomorrow and see what I can come up with. The points values given are approximate, based on maximum magic item/character choices, but without taking into account "Dogs of war" choices which could probably boost them by a 1000 points of so. Pictures to follow in separate threads at some point.

Counted up the Empire and Dwarves, both are around 6,500 points.
Will take some photos and do a battle report tomorrow. For now, here's some scenary.
