3 old Trolls

Ok, so way back in this thread:
http://the-lost-and-the-damned.664610.n2.nabble.com/WIP-Troll-td3166594.html#a3166594 my forum co-founder Robert The Damned said I should post some pictures of my trolls up for all to see. I when I replied I said I'd do so when I had a few more of them finished.
Now I have to confess that I don't have any more Trolls finished now than I did back then, in fact there is an extra one waiting to be painted along with many, many other minis (I tend to buy many times more miniatures per a year than I manage to get painted in the same time).
Any way, with out further a-do here's some classic Citadel Trolls from the mid 90's I painted a few years back.

Stone Trolls

I think I must have painted the Stone Trolls back in 2003, but the paint jobs still look ok. I never liked the way these Trolls appeared painted in the Warhammer 4th and 5th Edition books (bright-red claws and eyes for some reason), the colour scheme for my Stone Trolls was inspired by a painting of a GW Mail-Order Troll I found in the back of an old White Dwarf and I think they came out pretty well. It's been so long since I painted these that I can't remember exactly which colours I used, but I'm pretty sure Regal Blue and Codex Grey were involved somewhere along the line. my usual bone techniques would have been used on the Claws, Teeth, Spikes and the skulls hanging round the neck of the one with the Hammer. The eyes look they would have been Vomit Brown and Bad Mood Yellow with Chaos Black pupils. The bases were bulked out using Green Stuff to hide the odd looking millimetre thick chunks of metal that sculpted to the model's feet (like integral bases, even though the Trolls were clearly designed to be mounted on Citadel Monster Bases for use in Warhammer as they had mounting pegs)
BTW - Admittedly I shouldn't have taken pictures of my blue and grey Trolls on a blueish-grey background, so these photos probably don't really do the paint jobs justice (sorry).

Painted slightly more recently, but still not that new, my River Troll was done back in 2006. I often refer to this as the 'Swamp Troll' due to the very dark murky colour scheme I gave it. Again I can't remember exactly which paints I used, but I think I must have used a mixture of Chaos Black and Dark Angels Green for the skin and highlighted up through several stages to a mixture of Snot Green and Fortress Grey, but some Catachan Green and a few washes of Green Ink might have been involved too at some stage. I highlighted the scales and belly in greys and painted the inside of the ears a similar warm grey to the Stone Trolls. The hair was painted in various browns and given a wash of Green Ink to make it look like dank river-weed. The Fish in it's right hand was painted Codex Grey, highlighted with a mixture of Fortress Grey and Space-Wolves Grey and given a wash of Sky Blue Ink. Claws, Teeth, Spikes and the Club were painted using my usual bone technique and the shiny-stones on it's ear piercings and top-knot holding-thing were painted Red Gore, highlighted up to Ruby Red and given a wash of Red Ink. They eyes were again probably Bad Moon Yellow over a Vomit Brown base-coat .
This Troll received 1 minor bit of conversion work, it's top-knot of hair was replaced with a long flowing one that I think came off a High Elf or Eldar model. The base was decorated with some cut-up textured plasticard to give it a broken slime-covered cobble-stone look (the Troll was originally intended to lurk under a city bridge in a Mordheim game)

Troll are one of my favourite creatures and I have many more Trolls still to paint including: The huge Heresy Dungeon Troll, a newer metal Citadel Warhammer Troll (circa 2006-2007), 2 old Ral Partha Trolls, a Metal Citadel LotR 'Isengard' Troll, A Plastic Citadel LotR 'Mordor' Troll and my as yet unfinished almost scratch built Forest Troll conversion. I am also looking out for a 3rd Stone Troll so I can re-enact a certain scene from The Hobbit when I've got enough Dwarfs painted up!

Re: 3 old Trolls

I've always liked these trolls, really nicely done. The photos don't do them justice but they still look pretty good.
