I've just had a quick check and I can't find them mentioned in any of the RT books I have (ie rulebook and all the WD compendium books). Obviously they were mentioned and shown in the 2nd Ed books but I'd not be surprised if they were invented for SC, none of the other chapters at the time were in such bright primary colours.
