My advice is pick the edition your happiest with (if your army is 5th edition era use 5th) my own armies work best in 3rd, 4th and 5th edition after which I have to drop certain units and my Undead I have to spit into 2 smaller armies (Tomb Kings and Vampire Counts)
it also depends on which version your opponents are willing to play - so find out what/who you might be facing
if you are determined to play in tournaments however you'll need to up to date with the latest edition (8th) - you may be able to 'counts as' some units, but unfortunately you'll probably have to drop a few things and (even worse) buy new units
