6th edition, missing stats

I'm looking at getting back into playing battle games. At some point I'm going to be trying "Fantasy Warriors" but for now will be playing Warhammer just to get back into it.

I have 6th edition and the army lists, so will be using that.

My question is this. Where the stats for a model I am using isn't in the army book, is it better to look back editions, or to newer editions?

So far the models are:-

Empire war wagon: Can't find anything after 5th edition for this, so might have to adapt those rules.

Ungrim Ironfist, the slayer king: I found some stats for him from 5th edition.

Thorgrim Grudgebeare: This guy I found in 7th edition, but some of the runes he have don't exist, but seem to be compatible with 6th edition when I looked them up.

Any advice appreciated.

P.S. Will be posting pics of the armies at some point; Chaos, Dwarves, Empire and Dark Elves. Some are painted by a professional, some by me, and some not at all.
