One thing I like to do with chests unless I've got a specific treasure in mind is to have Heros draw 2-4 cards from the Treasure Deck, apply the effects of any Traps they trigger first, then any Wandering Monsters that have sneaked up on them and finally let them have the Treasure.

This can allow you to be a bit creative with chests too, if they draw a Trap, tell them the chest was trapped. A spike or arrow trap might indicate some kind of firing-mechanism built into the chest, a pit-trap might mean the floor infront of the chest gives way or maybe the chest itself is the pit and the Hero falls awkwardly into it when they open it - the lid could even even slam shut trapping the Hero inside until someone else frees them!
If they draw a Wandering Monster maybe a small monster (like a Snotling, Spider or a Giant Rat) was hiding inside the Chest just waiting for your Heroes to open it! ... or maybe the Chest is the Monster! Replace the Chest with a shape-shifting creature like a Mimic!
