From a non-gamers point of view, or at least from the point of view of someone who has stood on the sides and frowned a lot at the sheer amount of stuff there is to know about the hobby, I didn't find the movie too bad.
There was no character development, but I'm reliably told that ultramarines tend not to have characters anyhow, but it kind of meant that I didn't care when anyone died, which felt like a shame. The film was watchable, and as I said, from a non-gamers point of view, understandable. Which I think is fairly important. The only part I felt needed explaining (and consequently asked my more-knowledgable companion viewers about) was the gene-seed part. But considering tht was only one line in the film I think anyone could watch it and understand it even if they didn't know anything regarding space marines.
