It strikes me that a lot of the things you don't like about 40k are in fact the things that make 40k unique (Don't get me wrong I dislike Spacemarines in the recent additions as much as anyone, but they are an integral part of the background along with Chaos and Deamons ect, I'd like to see SM forces back how they were in the days of RT) and the things you like you could get from another game. and of course anyone who has the slightest idea about value for money can see GW's prices are predendous.
It's just a thought, but maybe it's time you moved on from 40k, it's a big leap to make but if you enjoy the hobby you'll find it's worth it. Your not necessarily being forced onto Historical either, 40k isn't the only game you could get what you want out of. Most (if not all) Sci-games have an IG equivalent and most have other factions/races similar to Tau, Eldar and Orks, ect (It's just 40k that has Spacemarines).
It's a disease of the average person you'll meet in a GW store (especially the staff) that they can't see the wider world of wargaming out side of GW, but talk to the people you game with regularly see how they feel about it all and look for alternatives to GW. (hell you've also got a whole forum here)
Gamers are suckled at the teat of GW's heaving bussoms and many carry on even after they've realised how hollow and plastic they are ... I'm getting to point in this post now were I'm about to compare GW to some ageing actress desperately trying not to loose her looks and I've lost sight of my point, which I think was people need to be weened off GW and explore the hobby as a whole.

In the late 80's and early 90's GW was a sexy actress in her prime years, but now 20 years on from her best work, time and plastic surgery have taken their toll, she may still look attractive from a distance, but she's become a high maintenance bitch. She's air brushed in every photo and those things that made her so attractive back then are now mostly plastic that doesn't quite look right or live up to how they used to be. Maybe it's time to look at some one a little younger and up coming who hasn't yet (and hopefully won't) let success go to their head. (Heh! If I could think of a actress who's carrier spans the same time period as Games Workshop's history and also had the initials GW this analogy would be perfect)

Ok I've got that analogy out of my system now ... back to the topic

Yea try some of the other sci-fi games, talk to the people you game with and see what else they play    and if they only play 40k see if you can spark some interest in other games, there quite a few out there.
I will now try to recommend (off the top of my head) a few alternative Sci fi war games that will give you all the lasers, space ships and aliens you like

Kryomek

Contemporary looking military types verses Xenomorphs, it's like the Aliens films as wargame
Some of the best priced figures in the industry plus kick-ass resin terrain, vehicle kits and large monsters. If nothing else a great source of stuff for IG and 'nid players.

No Limits

no, no, no, no, no, no please try and put that early 90's dance song out of your head and concentrate.
No Limits is deliberately designed with veteran players in mind, it's a war game were you can use all those old troop types and vehicles that have disappeared from the newer rulebooks.
What's more the rulebooks are free to download!

Combat Zone

a very reasonably priced sci-fi game from the people at EM4, I don't know much about it, but you can download a  free play-test book

there are plenty of other games out there besides, so check them out!

PS. how can you play MTG and yet think the magic in WFB is a bit deus ex machina?
