Nothing wrong with basing models after painting them.  I recently saw an example in White Dwarf that converted me to the idea under certain circumstances, in which the painter added sand to the base after painting the model, which was then shaded (and bonded) with a heavy coat of ink mixed with watered down PVA: a good, well-protected finish that looked excellent.

But no model looks finished unless it's got its base done somehow, IMO.

I didn't pay attention to the Sicarius conversion before.  I love it!  I seem to be detecting some sculpting work on the model.  Is that a trick of the light or have you redone his shoulder pad?
