Well, Hans, the guy who plays Dwarves in our campaign plays really sneaky.  Hiding, using cover almost pathologically and generally avoiding any form of combat if the missions allow it. All in order to preserve his strength and scrape up a few more GC's to be able to actually replace any losses or expand the Warband at all.

He swears by Beardlings by the way, since they are the cheapest minions.

Also: Crossbows are the way to go.
