As you may or may not know I'm currently doing some work for Triple Helix. Here's some pictures of the main project I've been working on this week; a trench-warfare table for Warmachine, 40k, Historical WWI/WWII or any other game you want to play across a trench table. More pictures of this and other terrain I've been working on for THW to come later!
In the mean time why not come visit Triple Helix and see how much further I've gotten with the project for yourself
Nice, not really historically accurate but it'd be awesome for any sci-fi or suitable fantasy. Game of FRAG with rulers not a grid is in order I believe.
awesome! it could use some zig zags and defiles like real trenches but as a sci fi table its bosting. i just hope doing it as a "job" doesnt burn you out! love the bunker doors too. cant WAIT till this is all painted up!
During WW1 ladders were used more for scaling the trenches. Curves and zig zagged angles were used more for defence.
Smaller trenches were used for listening post. Lots of razor wire. i made my own using old metal book binders and reshaping around a pencil, but you probably now that.
Great job mate
Mark
Ps may be and old busted tank crashed into a trench would look good. M
A few more Work In Progress shots of the trench warfare table
^All the wood and card bits being sealed with watered down PVA glue and some texture being added to the paths
^Craters added to noman's land
^the entrance to the tunnels
^lots of PVA, sand and gravel added for texture, it's still drying now!
^a few close ups of the trenches

The original layout was something that Steve and Tom had designed with a 40k or Warmachine scenario in mind, the bunkers are supposed to act as command points for a large artillery piece that would sit in the clear space at the back of the table, so I guess it's more an artillery emplacement than a trench system really.
I would like to do a more traditional zig-zag trench system with support trenches and such, with tank traps and fox holes ect. but I fear this would lead to less interesting games because, it would be far to easy to defend ... after all it was trenches like that which brought the 1st World War to a near stalemate - que more historically aware gamers correcting me for making such a generalized statement - yes I am aware heavy machine guns, the invention of tanks and the use of aircraft for reconnaissance also played a part, but I think we can all agree that a game in which you send squads of men 'over the top' and have them shot to bits by heavy weapon fire from behind hard cover on the other side of the table again and again wouldn't make for a particularly exciting game for either player
I've tried avoid adding too much to the board that would tie it to any particular game, setting or period, thus there are no dead Imperial Guardsmen, wrecked German Tanks or Cygnar Warjack remains used as detailing. the idea being that the table can be used for any game, Sci-fi, Historical, Steam punk or post apocalyptic that you might want to play in a trench warfare setting

That's looking better and better Mortis, makes more sense now you've mentioned its ment to be more like a gun position than front-line trench system.

That's an incredibly good point, whilst I feel most wargames wouldn't play out like that (especially 40K where most units get better saves than cover saves), but it avoids that situation all together.
The table looks better each time you work on it! I too am looking forward to seeing it painted so I can put some models down on it and start chucking some dice around!
Anybody wishing to play it can visit http://www.triplehelixwargames.co.uk to check the opening times and book a session. Look forward to seeing some of you there!

Thank you and Wish granted Steve, the table should be ready for gaming by the weekend all going well
of course Steve gets to see the progress of the work on the trench table every day, but for benefit of the rest of you reading this
The PVA was left to dry over the weekend ...
and the table received it's first couple of coats of paint on Monday morning ...
it's all brown ... other colours to be added over the next few days

First of all it truely does look arwsome, Next will this be the first project you have started and completed in record time lol Well done mate.
In Real life battles, to take an enemy position it is advised 3/1 on the attacker but a hardened position 5/1 with the expectations of loosing 2/1 and 4/1 casulties.
ok iwas over THW today & the photos dont do it justise but its lost some of its wetness look but it is nice
the photos above were taken while the paint was still wet

^down in the trenches
^a couple of close ups of the defenses with some 28mm WWII miniatures
^a shot from the nomans-land edge
