The workshop was busy as ever. Chimeras chassis of all types and flavours sat in various states of assembly. filthy oil pooled in low lying places and sand and grit got everywhere else. there were even a few brand new vehicles sat still in the factory grey, awaiting spraying, idents and commissioning.
Brother Matias stalked along the broken ones, a quiet prayer here, a spanner turn there. The Mech/Techs kept out of his way and he them- he rarley spoke and when he did it was a polite request to winch this, replace that. but he could work magic on these broken hulks, dragging back from the brink of scrap wagons that a normal M/T wouldnt even raid for parts. Matias' silent revue was broken by the clatter of a tank rolling in the shop. It was in a very sad state; its paint was chipped and peeling, HK missile rack not functional. greasy smoke came from the engine cover and the drive sprockets were worn to the nub. Sigue Volta walked in front of it (walking behind would have been at worst filthy and at best unpleasant) and handed the work docket personally to the Crew Chief.
"From the Boss, personally. Fix it- priority"
"but sir, its a wreck and we are snowed under with work. I've got three Russes needing parts. Its better to strip it."
Sigue was not an un-empathic man and realised that indeed there was a air of desparation in the workshop. there seemed to be more wagons in here broken than out in the hangers. But there was no way THIS one was going to be scrapped...
"Check the Vehicle Serial Number, Chief" he said, quietly. the Chief pulled a screw driver from his top pocket and worked some carbon scoring from under the drivers view port where the Registration plaque was fitted.
"this trucks really seen some action... cant get this mess off... ah. three-one-seven dash oh-oh-oh-one... By the Emporer!"
"yes."
"I will sort it Sir, soon as."
As Sigue strolled from the shop he could already hear the sound of Matis's servo arms tearing panels off the tank. They all knew that wagon was the very first heavy tank inducted to the AF(R) and had been in more battles than some Space Marine Chaplains. He also smiled as he noticed the supply ships landing off on the field, unloading fresh troops and supplies. And one in particular unloading crates and crates of spares, tools and heavy equipment...
And about fifty bright young Mech/Techs fresh from motorschool...There is a bit of a black joke in military parlance that comes from the Vietnam war. The village of Ben Tre was supposedly in the thrall of the VC, so as the Major in charge of the operation said-
"It became necessary to destroy the village in order to save it."this is very relevant as I have now decided to strip and refurbish one of my very oldest tanks, the second one i bought and the first leman russ. And like the village of Ben Tre it may be that in this process the tank is what we in the trade call "fucked up".
i did the same kind of thing with my first Chimer a while ago and brought it right up to standard, so I am sort of confident this will be ok. However the work on this vehicle is much more intense. I plan to remove the side sponsons, the hull las-cannon and several turret embeleshments.
here is a picture of the tank with only the cupola removed:
so this list of jobs is this:
-remove spotlight encasement, HK missile mount and the old skull motif i used to use on my tanks from the turret
-remove the side heavy bolter sponsons completely
-pop off the hull weapon top and lift out the lascannon
-somehow replace the hatches under the sponsons which are long gone
-remove tracks for a respray of hull.
i have always used that precision glue with the needle style tip so hopefully the bond will not be that strong. some guys slop that shit on and it makes it impossible to diss-assemble.
its sort of weird that a tank that is only what two or so years old is needing to be re-worked but i suppose it shows how far ive come!
