Terrain for Flames of War

Over the last year Flames of War has slowly become more and more popular at Triple Helix (which coincides with a drop in the popularity of 40k due to GW's price rises). and this means an increase in demand for more terrain of the appropriate scale. While most trees, roads, rocks and hills ect, work well at pretty much any scale, buildings tend not to. So I've been painting up some small scale resin buildings to bolster Triple Helix's terrain collection.

First up here's desert-y, adobe, roman-ish looking buildings (some one correct me). The buildings are of simple design and at this scale you don't get lots of detail so these were a pretty simple paint job.

First the whole building was given a heavy dry brush of Scorched Brown, followed by Calthan Brown. Rocky bits of ground around the buildings were picked out in Codex Grey. The little bushes around the buildings got a coat of Dark Angels Green and a dry brushing of Snot Green. The walls where then given a slightly watered-down coat of Dheneb Stone followed by a thinned-down mixture of Flesh Wash which picked out all the cracks and texture.

^ On this last building I put in a little joke as a reference to Monty Python's The Life of Brain as these building reminded me of the architecture seen in the film

Re: Terrain for Flames of War

Very nice Mortis  The shading and weathered look you've got on the plastering on the buildings looks amazing. I always enjoy looking at terrain that you've painted, you seem to put in as much effort as you do with individual miniatures which is very uncommon, I know I can never be that bothered at least.

They're meant to be Egyptian/Tunisian style buildings for North Africa I believe, but that style of building is quite common all around the Mediterranean. Which is handy as I have some Deutsches Afrika Korp figures for my next army.

Yeah that's going to get a few chuckles and a few sighs of disappointment. I'll be firmly in the former group though!

Thanks Rob, although these are nothing special

here's 2 more building, this time French/Spanish looking painted using a similar method, not quite as interesting as the ones above, but still good to bulk out the terrain a little more

The roof tiles (if anyone is interested) were painted Mechrite Red and highlighted up though 2 stages to a 50/50 mix of Mechrite Red and Blazing Orange

Ah those look very nice also, a little cleaner but still I like the little dirtying you have done to the bottoms of the walls. As you say should fit in pretty much anywhere in western Europe, France or Italy were my first thoughts.

Looking good (Bricks 'n') Mortis.

Remind me, is Flames of War 15mm? or really really tiny?
