I thought I had posted about this game but I can't find the thread at the moment. So far I think you can buy the figures but not the whole game. Made by Soda Pop Miniatures Super Dungeon Explore seems to be very "Manga"/chibi influenced in aesthetics. I was hoping it would be fairly straight forward in play but in looks a little more technical than, say HeroQuest. The rooms on the dungeon board in the demo rules are fixed but BoardGameGeek says it's played on "modular boards". Demo rules "Rise of the Kobolds" http://web.sodapopminiatures.com/downloads/SuperDungeonExplore/sdedemorules.pdf Dungeon Explore on the Soda Pop Miniatures site: http://web.sodapopminiatures.com/selectcharacter?product=SDE BoardGameGeek entry: http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/92190/super-dungeon-explore A very static review of the miniatures on YouTube: http://youtu.be/b5v1w2x_MXc (which some of you may find fascinating but I wanted to gnaw my arms off) (The dwarf is really growing on me) Has anyone actually seen this in play or seen a box in shop anywhere yet? |

The miniatures for these turned up at THW a month or so back - I was immediately drawn to the packages with the word Dungeon on them in big friendly letters and then looking inside the blister pack I saw a rather nice looking resin chest, a small headless body (which for a moment I assumed to be that of a halfling) and a round blob of metal. Trying to figure out what the large round blob of metal was, I looked at the packet's label and read 'Elf Ranger' (or something similar) the following thoughts then occurred: What scale are these? the chest looks to be 28mm or there about? Mis-labled packet? Fuck that big thing is the head! it's a Chibi-Manga-Bobblehead miniature! ... and some idiot is going to want to use one of these in my Quest games! Nnnoooooooo! Yea not a fan of these ... not a fan at all - but if could buy the just chests separately I'd like to

Awwww, c'mon, those are so cute :D Would you rather have this giga mecha robot armor bot thing on your board? http://web.sodapopminiatures.com/selectcharacter?product=RelicKnights Pretty nice mini's if you ask me. Shame they don't have that kind of stuff in Europe. (I do agree it doesn't fit in with HQ, but I wouldn't mind it if my wife used em. The chibi ones. She'd kick my ass if I stared using the ample breasted manga ones :P )

I've got a really sneaky feeling that the company isn't even Japanese. Just a hunch.
Although the Soda Pop mascot is definitely of the type Sjeng's partner would kick his proverbial ass for owning. :D I think I read somewhere on the site that SodaPop/SDE figures were "heroic 32mm" but you can probably take that with pinch of salt where chariacature and exagerated scenery is concerned. Like the Munchkin dungeon crawl game (which seems a bit silly but similar to WHQ), I'm mainly curious about how this works mechanically, i.e. modular dungeons, random vs. scenario etc. They are definitely growing on me. Shame the site doesn't have much info. It's listed on Amazon, but isn't available yet. Hey wait a second. I'll just send them an email. :) |

Cute isn't something really I look for in Fantasy, I like my Fantasy dark, gritty and epic! But I can see there is a market for this sort of thing, incidentally people interested in Chibi types should check out the War Heads range from Scotia Grendel but personally this is my idea of adventure: and not this: I'm guessing Soda Pop are American or Canadian

I've just be blogging about this effect art has upon what we feel is acceptable in a game world. I've come to the conclusion that I'm really easily swayed now by any colour picture with swords. Which leads me to ask, Mortis where did you get that second picture? I am very intrigued.
I saw the chests on Board Game Geek, and yup, they're probably overly large, but are detailed and very cool. :) |

The 2nd picture is from the JRPG computer game 'Dragon Quest' and the first image is used in TSR's introductory D&D game DragonQuest - I thought the juxtaposition between the images from 2 very different games that share the same name was amusing
