Space Pirates V2.0

Mezillious
Hey guys. A while ago I posted about a game I had run where the marine teams travelled through space in small crafts and docked with sections of the hulk.

Well I've been thinking about it some more and I thought - what if the marines had larger boarding ship and were able to attack and board other marine's ships?

Right off the bat I've got to say that this idea does not in any way follow the 40k lore - I'm completely making it up based on what I think would make a good game.

- Marine players start with 1 boarding ship and 6 marines ( 1 commander, 3 heavy weapons and 2 advanced bolters - 1R + 1W firing
- Boarding ships will be about half the size of a board section and will include 3 weapons platforms, 1 command bridge and 1 shield generator.
- minimum of 2 marines to operate a boarding ship
- Weapons platforms will fire EMP (disables enemy ships), harpoon (halves movement of enemy ship and drags players ship with it allowing boarding) or heavy cannons (can destroy other weapon platforms/ shield generators.
- Within a certain range marines can use a boarding pod to board enemy ships - can only be activated with a minimum of 4 marines on board pod - this means leaving your ship very lightly defended)
- ships will have armored sections that can be targeted when firing to bust open the hull. This could force sections of the ship to lock down trapping marines
- floating alien ships perhaps?
- Destroying a weapon platform or shield generator while it is manned kills that marine

Once aboard a ship the regular SC rules govern movement and firing etc, just thought this would be a cool way to look at the game from a different angle. I'll work on some prototypes of ships and post them up when I'm done.

This post was updated on .
Here's a quick prototype of a ship

- 3 weapon platforms (numbered)

- Shield generator at the rear

- Command bridge in the centre

- Red borders can be targeted by harpoon and boarding pod

- Green borders can be targeted by heavy cannon and EMP

Let me know what you think

Ever hear of a game from Games Workshop called Necromunda? It's similar in nature to this. To tie it into Warhammer 40k lore all you would have to do is say refugees escaping from Necromunda hijack a supply ship and have begun ransacking the galaxy. It's kinda what the orcs do anyways, and I believe theres even Orc Pirate tribe lore out there somewhere. I kinda use a Necromunda points system for weapons for my scouts and commandos for space crusade.

I'll be posting soon in my space crusade expansion 3d furniture that ive made like computer terminals, and the like soon.

Hi Mezillious,

I'm relatively new to the blog here, but I allready downloaded your idea and boarding ship design from the original post. I wasn't able to put it to use yet, but when you stumble untosomething great like this idea, you yust have to save it for later. Your new idea, or update, seems hugely fun to play as wl! Perhaps this idea can be expanded by making different classes of ships (small ones and bigger ones, attack ships and cargo vessels, etc). Perhaps a huge war between the 40K races?
First time I read your idea I thought of a table with a black cloth over it representing space and using rulers to move the ships. This way, travelling times would increase and the chaos space marines could perhaps launch a counter attack!
I will certainly continue following this blog with great interest!

I was reading this a few days ago and it got me thinking - this looks very much like a boardgame equivalent to the vidya Faster Than Light...

I would like to see some more rules or ideas come up in the new year though, or should I just go and create my own...?
