Sister Anja's memories of the Mines of Kazak Zaroth

Madame M
Anja sat back and considered the previous evenings work. The quest had been interesting, though she still wasn’t certain about her companion fighters. The first room the group had come to after their descent was a singular room with two doors.

As Anja had expected, the witch hunter and barbarian had charged in, literally bashing one door off it’s hinges and charging through with no consideration for what might be beyond. Only the elf mage D’ynar had stopped and considered them. He informed her of the blue glow and the runes marked above which he couldn’t read. Showing ingenuity typical of his race he had traced the runes in the dust for her to translate. The group had charged off through one marked refinery, and the one still locked was the forge. D’ynar had gotten the thief to unpick it.

The thief. Now there was a character. Anja still didn’t trust thieves. One of her first quests outside the safety of the temple had been with a thief, and Anja had the sneaking suspicion that he had walked away with more than he should have. Still, no reason to judge one thief by the actions of another. But still, Machela Bladeheart had proved useful in opening the door. Unfortunate then, that later on she had again proved inept by setting off a trap while trying to locate the trigger. The flames had only been stopped by someone pulling on a chain out of curiosity. Anja hadn’t seen who, she had been watching a skaven get away.

The group had finally been pulled together enough to go into the forge. Ephilian the Elf archer had to be given credit for that. He managed to convince the barbarian Shonagh to stop running down corridors in search of battle, and to rejoin the rest of the group. Anja respected him for that. Being able to talk a barbarian out of plunging rabidly down a corridor in search of a fight was an admirable quality. Though there was that suspicious moment where he and D’ynar had spoken in Elven. Planning something no doubt.

Still, Anja had to admit the elves seemed fairly levelheaded. Both seemed eager for battle and glory but neither had the impetuous nature of Shonagh. And when Anja had climbed down into a pit to heal D’ynar he had graciously helped her out of the pit before climbing out himself. And neither of them had charged headfirst into battle.

Unlike the barbarian. But she had guts. Anja smiled in remembrance. Shonagh’s barbarian lust for blood was all too apparent. Though again, she wasn’t completely stupid – she backed off when she needed healing. Yes, Anja would be happy to fight by her side again.

And then there was the witch-hunter Recht Helbrum…..hmm…… The only thing that Anja would credit him with was tactics when the quest looked as if it was going to fail. Other than that he had been missing for part of the fight – that room with the spiders. He had been missing for all of that, and the barbarian and elf-archer were nearly lost then. Anja had had her hands full dealing with skaven and couldn’t get in to help fight the spiders, though she had healed those in need.

And then there was the fact that whenever she healed him, Recht immediately charged into battle (without the luck of the barbarian it has to be added) and instantly needed more healing. Still, that was her part to play in this quest. She was the one Sigmar answered when she prayed for healing help and therefore she needed to believe that if the witch-hunter was meant to be alive then she was there to heal. Though she could feel his mistrust of her skills. She had no doubt that if he had encountered her in a village he would have denounced her as a witch.

And then there was the teamwork of everyone. They had opened a door and come across a capstan. It had taken four of the strongest in the team to push the wheel round, and then they wished they hadn’t. Beyond the portcullis was a room with a ratman with a mechanical claw, strong enough to lift the portcullis again when they let it go, a skaven warlock, two Skaven with a Ratling gun, and two other rat men guards.

It was Recht that suggested the tactics of falling back sensibly, allowing her and Machela to be out of the frontline, Ephilian with his bow to be up high for a vantage point, and D’ynar, Shonagh and himself to take the brunt of the fight. And it had worked – the group had survived and managed to get out of the mines with relatively little damage. Though the overall quest had failed. They hadn’t found any dwarf prospectors.

Anja’s overriding memory of the mines was dark. The fights had been hard, healing had been required by everyone at various points, and the mines had been laid so full of traps that there seemed to be pits down every corridor. And Skaven. Anja detested Skaven. Still, the group were alive, and the refinery could waitfor a little longer while they recuperated.

Nice post, idea and storytelling Madame M! This isn't only a pictures gallery of a game. Your story makes the game "alive"!
