Many years, before WoC's Dungeon Tiles, and sometime after the fabled Dungeon Geomorphs there were colour printed card sets made in the 1980's - one series was Games Workshop's Dungeon Floor Plans. These sets also spawned boxed scenarios and map art in White Dwarf was sometimes constructed from these sets. INSERT ... Nostalgic montage by Mortis ... ;) (No-one appears to be currently holding copyright on these designs and they are posted here purely for reference and personal use etc. ) Perhaps with some modifications they could be employed in virtual table-top programs or dungeon editors. Anyone familiar with my own dungeon plans will see that I was heavily influence by sets like these - and boardgames like Warlock of Firetop Mountain, along with the excellent but bland tiles in Warhammer Quest. I've own a copy of the very first simple Dungeon Floor Plans set and used to play D&D with it as a teenager, but recently I acquired a sort of a "job lot" of sheets from different sets on Ebay. I've made some scans 100 DPI pngs - they should print at roughly the right size when opened in a new browser window. Note that these early sets use a 2cm grid. Steps and wood from the first edition set (apologies that these are not full sheets)
The wood sheet was for doors, chests, tables, chairs, bridges, wooden flooring. Generally some of the door pieces doubled as chests. Doors were used as wall dividers.

There were many other sets, including caverns and waterfronts, (insert dates later or just go to wikipedia or sommat...) but they were all generally two colour pages. Not long after this the whole affair is given a glossy make over... Little details! Corridor flag stones with gunk! I blame Warhammer ...! ___Chambers and lairs ... From Dungeon Lairs? ... Feel free to add your own scans of old floor plan sets. :) |
Excellent!
I'm glad you've posted these because I have only a random assortment which includes the Goblin Cave and I haven't seen these other pieces in many years. I think my Goblin Cave has no grid cross-hairs. Could that one of the differences between the early Lairs set and the AHQ expansion? It makes you wonder about what GW thought they were doing when they first brought them out - an RPG accessory needs to be more than card art - but perhaps it was because many players and scenario pull-outs used different scales (?). Incidentally there was an apology on the description of the collection I won on Ebay, because the previous owner had drawn a clumsy pen grid on a Chaos Throne Room, which I actually found rather charming, but it does ruin it a little - I've begun not to mind a little hand writing in rulebooks, because it shows gaming enthusiasm! I'm still a little obsessed with creating natural but contrived grids on paper, with scenic features like little stones delineating the dpace - I find that the cross-hairs or an overlay of straight lines too artificial somehow - like a computer read-out. Just wait till I try to conquer caverns ... (boy, I'll have to eat my words). That Bandits Cave would be great for one off random encounters in long journeys - a fight in the open (Orcs/humanoids) followed back to their lair where the loot is. One session kidnap and rescue scenarios. Ace. The Goblin Cave reminds me a lot of the caves in Oblivion - it's the rocky levels and the fencing, I think. ___ EDIT A quarter way down this page at RPG.net under "Generic" is a list of GW of some of the floor plans and expansion sets from the early 80's. |

This a rather late reply on my part here, I just remembered this thread existed and moved it to the new Dungeon Tiles section!
Yes the original Dungeon Lair (ect) tiles had no grid (with the exception of the 'natural' grid afforded by square floor tiles) I think this was because they were intended to be used in WFRP and WFB (and even Rogue Trader if you read the old Warhammer Siege book!) which do not use a grid for movement (you'll notice maps in WFRP books are grid-ed for scale only). Later when they were reprinted for AHQ and Mighty Warriors the 'grid-less' tiles had the 'cross-hairs grids' added to them because of the grid based movement of the games In the same manner a lot of the scans of the old floorplans you'll find online have had grids added to them using MS Paint, Paintshop Pro and the like

Excellent finds!
I'm especially happy to see all the Mighty Warriors Tiles - one of my best friends in school had Mighty Warriors and we'd spend many weekends playing HeroQuest and other dungeon based games on a mixture of the lovely Mighty Warriors Tiles and my HeroQuest and AHQ tiles plus a few WHQ tiles that came in White Dwarf - I'm all filled with a great sense of nostalgia now those were the days! ^Ahh the old days! One summer my younger brother video-ed hours of footages of us gaming, he was stood behind me for most of the time, so I am spared the embarrassment of you all seeing young teenage me with a mullet. These images were ripped from the 90's camcorder tape using a (back then) state of the art Pentium 100 with a TV card fitted (those were simpler times and these images looked a lot bigger on a 640x480 screen!)

Holy crap, that skinny young man is me!
I can also see some of the Space Hulk floorplans in the mix; our game was very dimension-bending. I distinctly remember my Imperial Guard warband backed into a corner firing volleys of las-fire into a shambling horde of the undead. I think we also had some problems with the Ratmen... Also, teehee, your teenage mullet. - D

Does anyone have some high res. scans of entire game boards, such as:
Dragon Strike Dragon Quest Dark World + Expansion ...etc? preferably in colour, but a black/white version could be handy for creating quests on as well. If anyone owns such boards, and I know some of you do :P scans in parts will do, as I could easily photoshop them together. Thanks!

I see what I can do
The DarkWorld boards aren't worth scanning though as they aren't actually grid based

Great, thanks!
I managed to find the four DragonStrike templates. All I need are some high res color scans now. plus the entire castle map of DragonQuest, and possibly other interesting boards :)

Thanks! I've been SO busy lately, I've barely got time for anything HQ related anymore. Wish I had more time to paint. Ah well, x-mas soon!

Your tiles from Dungeon Lairs and Dungeon Rooms were used in WFRP adventure Floating Gardens of Bahb-Elonn which can be found in White Dwarf magazine #100.
Can someone who have that magazine can make HQ scans of color map pages? I've lost it somewhere and can't find it back. Thanks in advance! |
Thank You for this heartwarming welcome - MortiS-the-Lost.
And thank you for your maps. But can you make better scans? like 600dpi at least. I wanted to put them also through additional Photoshop treatment for reducing scanlines and other noise and make from them some temporary tiles. I'm hunting right now for "Rooms" and "Lairs" on ebay so its only as temporary solution. And no, I'm not planning to play "Floating Gardens" any time soon. For this after all I would need to have rest of adventure except just maps. ;) But I was playing it some years back. My friend was The GM. We laught a lot back then playing it. As I remember we got into the vault and got the treasure. And we also lost it all soon. |
