RTB1 Space Marines WIP

It's not often I post here in the Sci-Fi section, but here's some minis I've been working on recently ...

Some time last year at one of  Triple Helix Wargames's brilliant 'bring and buy' days I picked up a quite large bag of old space marine bits with an eye to expanding my Space Crusade miniatures with a few extra squads to allow additional chapters to be played - the bag had a lot of Space Crusade Marines in it and the very similar 40k 2nd edition boxed game Space Marines all in various states of damage and bad painting. The plan was to strip, repair, restore and re-paint the marines as Squads of Dark Angels, Space Wolves, Iron Hands, Blood Drinker, Flesh Tearers, Silver Skulls ... and so on, until I had a squad for each chapter that's symbol appears on the 'Command Centre' floor piece

Anyway - it seems I've crusaded my way off topic here - amongst the Space Crusade and 2nd Edition 40k Marine parts were some RTB1 Space Marines, some were in the regular 'bone' plastic, but others were in green plastic (which I'd never seen before). They were in a pretty sorry state, some thickly painted, others covered in polystyrene-cement and glued together in strange ways, but there where quite a few of them so I figured I could probably take all the least damaged miniatures plus a few loose bits and restore a few of them to their former glory.

And last week I finally got round to doing it and the result (so far) is the Squad you see in the picture before my ramblings. I decided to make the squad usable in Space Crusade since it's about the only game I play which you can use Space Marines in (and also the only one I can think of where you just need the 1 squad). Note the Marine on the right hand side of the picture which I converted to hold a spare Space Crusade Auto-cannon/Assault-cannon using a pair of arms which had badly mangled hands. The Commander (on the far right) has a 2nd edition power-fist (I couldn't find an RTB1 Power-arm in good enough condition to use) and a Bolt Pistol - I might replace the boltpistol with a newer one though because the RTB1 Boltpistol looks very small and pathetic (especially next to the huge Power-glove on his other hand).

I will probably paint the squad as Crimson Fists in homage to the classic Rogue Trader rulebook, but the green plastic makes me think of Dark Angels too, so I'm not sure which to go for

Looks good dude :3
I kinda like the tiny gun myself, it's groovy. Kinda like a digital weapon by todays standards.

I'm just a little worried it won't look like a proper Bolt Pistol from a distance – but digital weapons are smaller again ...

I'm aware that RTB1 Marines are much sought after and go for a lot on eBay and these being in green rather than bone plastic may make them even rarer. But having said that these guys were in a very very poor state when I got hold of them and took a lot of cleaning up and scrounging spare parts from each other just to get these few models in a half-decent condition

its nice to see so many Beakies together.
there might be more joining them soon – looks like I have enough parts to make a Flamer armed Marine and I'm considering converting a few more to carry other Space Crusade Heavy Weapons as converting the one with the Auto-cannon proved quite easy

Shame one of those symbols isnt Angry Marines.

Clearly you didn't look closely enough ...

and while we're on the subject of the command centre's fine mosaic floor can anyone name all the chapter's who's symbols appear there? (it's kinda a trick question, but I'll see if anyone gets it)

May I tell you that I have my doubts about this Power Fist? It seems too large, al least in the picture.

I support this choice!

I had doubts about it myself – however it is about the same size as the RTB1 Power-arm (which interestingly is Right-handed). Today I replaced the tiny RTB1 Bolt-pistol with a more chunky Space Crusade one, which I think balances out the model a little better, making the Power-Fist look more in proportion

Well done for not falling into the trap of thinking the fist was for Imperial Fists! Here for the record is the chapter list from Rogue Trader from which the Space Crusade Command Centre took it's chapter symbols.

This has lead me to the theory that Imperial Fists may have been created for Space Crusade … can anyone confirm this?

Awesome work so far dude, go for CF though...that'd look awesome.

Come to think of it I've got a bunch of Space Crusade dudes and weapons floating about somewhere that you can have if you'd like.

I've just had a quick check and I can't find them mentioned in any of the RT books I have (ie rulebook and all the WD compendium books). Obviously they were mentioned and shown in the 2nd Ed books but I'd not be surprised if they were invented for SC, none of the other chapters at the time were in such bright primary colours.

Yes, my own research seems to indicate the same.
Which makes me think yellow Spacemarines may have been a game design decision; Blue and Red plastic are obvious choices for 'player pieces', Ork and Gretchin Pieces had to be Green plastic so Yellow plastic seems the next obvious choice (note that the only common plastic colour not used in the Space Crusade boxed game is Bone). Also I believe Dark Angels were still Black around this time, so there would have been very few choices for a 3rd colour of SpaceMarines (see the Rogue Trader chapter list somewhere above here)

Talking of Green plastic; the Green RTB1 marines are still a mystery ...

I believe the Imperial Fists Chapter were created by Ian Watson for his novel Space Marine. Although this was first published in 1993 (3 years after SCs release) GW sources give the impression that it had been penned during the late 1980's but was then put on hold for a short period. Could be wrong though!

Re: RTB1 Space Marines WIP

Haven't really touched it since, sorry - I'm concentrating on fantasy figures at the moment because I have group wanting to play dungeon based adventure games, when I find myself playing Space Crusade again, I'll get back some sci-fi stuff and we might see these finished
