Its be sad and heartening that I am able to say this is not as bad as you expect.
but its not that amazing either. for the quality of animation, dialogue and plot to be frank its like a PS2 cutscene, but by far the BEST PS2 cutscene you have ever seen, if that make sense. some bits are noticably better than others however. the look is what you would expect, the servitors are nice. but while the animation is no where near up to standard the voice actors are of course top notch. the soundscapes are also very dramatic. the story is very claustraphobic and errie but in an effort to add some narrative tension (essential really so i dont blame them) the marines talk to the Apocathery like he is some kind of pussy. and the Captain, who by definition should be a very smart, charasmatic cookie, seems to have gone to the "shut your fucking mouth, cunt, I'M the fucking gaffer here, oh and by the way i'm a right docile cunt" school of command. and when Proteus (pertwee) is ragging on The Apocathery as i have already mentioned, in fluff terms you sort of think in a "real" in universe Chapter, if the newest Brother in the compay called the actual Senior Apocathery a cowardly tit he would be told in no uncertain terms: "If you give me that same shit again twat-yap i will personally knock your fucking tooth out" The locations and sets have a VERY 40k feel, and the atmosphere is very familiar. you can be sure real GW personel at the highest level have made sure it all fits and is "cannon" which is nice to know the source has been respected. and who DOSEN'T want to see a squad of marines brassing off like fuck at a Greater Daemon? or a librarian shoot off MIND BULLETS? or some lad with a fucking chain axe in him... however it is worth a gander if you LOVE marines. and if you and your mates sit round with some tins you might enjoy it.... honest
"WAAAAGH! VROOM VROOM!!! DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA! Dead gud innit yoof?!" - typical Mekboy sales pitch

I'm watching it on DVD right at the moment - it's really slow!
Very loyal to the aesthetic of games, which pleases me. ... ooh I think the action has just started (2/3rds of the way through!) |
It's great stuff, my only criticism is for the excessive use of "depth of field" effect (most of the screen is blurred)
Chainswords :o ew! |

I recently saw the movie (and I didn't read this topic to avoid even a little spoiler). I totally agree with you, guys.
The Italian dubbing was cool too.

From a non-gamers point of view, or at least from the point of view of someone who has stood on the sides and frowned a lot at the sheer amount of stuff there is to know about the hobby, I didn't find the movie too bad.
There was no character development, but I'm reliably told that ultramarines tend not to have characters anyhow, but it kind of meant that I didn't care when anyone died, which felt like a shame. The film was watchable, and as I said, from a non-gamers point of view, understandable. Which I think is fairly important. The only part I felt needed explaining (and consequently asked my more-knowledgable companion viewers about) was the gene-seed part. But considering tht was only one line in the film I think anyone could watch it and understand it even if they didn't know anything regarding space marines. |
