Purple Worm

This is the 'Great Worm' from Reaper's brilliant 'Bones' range of high quality (and low cost) plastics.
This is the first Bones miniature I've painted so far and it was a great model to work on, covered with lots of great texture and detail. Removing the mold-line requires a little skill because of the nature Bones material - you'll need to use a very sharp knife and steady hand (using a file will do more damage than good).

Starting with an undercoat of MP Black Primer, the Body of the Worm was painted Citadel Worm Purple (an easy decision for the colour scheme) and highlighted with progressively lighter shades made by mixing Worm Purple with P3 Midlund flesh in varying amounts. The 'sphincter' of the mouth was painted Citadel Imperial Purple and washed with Leviathan Purple. The teeth were painted Citadel Scorched Brown and highlighted with Citadel Graveyard Earth, Kommando Khaki and finally Bleached Bone.
The rocks at the 'base' of the model - where the worm is bursting forth from the ground - were painted to match the floor stones of my dungeon; starting with a base-coat of Citadel Foundation Charadon Granite, followed by a wash of Citadel Badab Black then dry-brushed P3 Ironhull Grey followed by Citadel Codex Grey.

All in all I'm rather please with the model, simple yet effective paint-job thanks in no small part to the texture and detail of the model itself - what's more this is one of those model that can be used in many different games; of course it's a classic monster for fantasy dungeon crawls, but it would also fit well tunnelling through the surface of an alien world in a sci-fi game or as a mutant monstrosity in the radiation soaked deserts of a post-apocalypse game. It even works at different scales too, the smaller scale miniatures you use it along-side the more huge and terrifying creature is becomes.

Bonus pictures? Ah yes that's what I normally do isn't it?

… erm … here's some pictures of the purple worm before it was purple

Re: Purple Worm

It looks great!  I had some werewolf models that were from the Reaper Bones line of products.  I tried files and that didn't work well at all.  You definitely have better luck with a hobby knife like you say.

Re: Purple Worm

Ah yes I remember you saying you'd got a few of the Bones Werewolves when I posted my BlackTree WereWolves a while back. Have you got around to painting them yet?

My own Bones Werewolf is waiting for me to get round to using some green stuff to extend the integral base details onto the 30mm round base I've mounted it on, once that's done it'll be ready for painting - so I might have it finished soon!

I'm sure you had no problem to paint this model, great paint job as usual!
It's very similar to the D&D one (you don't say? It's a worm!), the one in plastic pre-painted with the molding lines, now I want to fix and re-paint it!
And maybe re-paint some other model of these miniatures!

This looks great, and the shading seems very crisp. Thanks for introducing me to the Bones range, it seems like great value for money on some solid models.

Can you confirm the price of the Worm in £££s? Looking through the Bones section on Reaper these things are about $2.50 or some such, which can't be right... If it's anywhere near that in pounds I'd be happy to get a load of them and use them for Chaos Spawn in 40K (with a little converting).

Re: Purple Worm

I ordered mine from miniature-heroes.co.uk where the Worm you see above is priced £2.10
