Plastic Fantasy Warriors Conversions

As a follow up to my review of EM4's ultra low-price fantasy plastics I thought I'd start a blog-thread of conversions I'm doing using them. The plan is this; I have 5 of each of the different figures , so I will do 4 different conversions of each and leave 1 completely stock (although I may re-base them if I feel like it). I will be using mainly plastic bits from my bits-boxes and probably doing little-to-no work with green-stuff and the like, but I will try and get as much variation out of these figures as I can.

Ok first up here's Dwarf Miner converted from a Dwarf with Axe using a few parts from a bag of spare Citadel Plastic Dwarf Miners parts that Me and Bert picked up at THW's open-day on the bring and buy tables.

^ The lack of sharp detailing on the newer Citadel plastic parts means they fit in pretty well with older miniatures by other companies like this one. On this model I've replaced the axe head with a pick-axe and carefully cut off the top of the Dwarf's head and given him a miner's helmet with candles, I've also given the model a backpack (which you can't see in this picture) to cover up the injection point on it's back

More to come later, I'm currently working on one of the Orcs

Very nice, goes to show what you can do with some cheap figures and a bits box.

Nice conversion.  I'm loving this all of these EM4 gaming-on-a-budget posts you're doing at the moment.

To be honest I haven’t really thought about how I'm going to paint these models yet, I'll probably use blue as the main colour of the scheme for the Dwarfs with rest being browns and metals for the leather and metal parts. For added variation I will try to make sure I do the beard on each Dwarf a different colour.

And now 3 more conversions …

First up, here's an 'Orc with Spear' conversion.

^ I replaced the head with one from an old Citadel plastic GorkaMorkA Ork and gave it a piece of shoulder armour from a Chaos Marauder sprue. Also having trimmed away the injection point on the Orc's back I replaced the 'missing' studs on the leather and also the rivets on the right shoulder with ones cut from another model.

And now - a couple of Dwarf Conversions

I - Dwarf with Spear. I cut down the spear and used the head from a Citadel plastic Dwarf's Axe to make it into a 2 handed axe. This particular model had a slight miscast in the form of a hole which I covered up using an 'ancestor head' token piece cut from another random Citadel Dwarf part.

II - Dwarf with Crossbow. I cut away most of the original (rather understated) crossbow and spliced on parts from a very chunky looking Citadel plastic Dwarf crossbow

III I used another 'ancestor head' to cover up where I trimmed away the  injection point on the model's back

IV a clearer view of the converted crossbow - I do wonder if maybe it's a little too chunky for this model, perhaps one with finer details would suit the model better.

(Yea I used Roman Numerals for the labels - it seemed like a cool idea at the time)

and Finally

^ The back of the Dwarf I converted into a miner, showing the backpack I used to cover the injection point

Nice work.  You must have a huge bitz box full of all kinds of goodies.  Those models from EM4 were a steal if I remember.  Best wishes.

I do  ... but I don't want that put other people off doing conversions like these. While a lot of my 'Bitz box' (ok, ok - Bitz Room) consists of a good near 20 years of worth of 'back logged' miniature kits, I also trade and buy spare bits from other hobbyists. As I mentioned in the first post of this thread the Dwarf Miner bits came from a big bag of spares me and Bert (Apocalypsedreamer) bought from the 'bring and buy' tables at Triple Helix's birthday event. The Dwarf bits used for the conversions of the 'Dwarf with Cross Bow' and the 'Dwarf with Spear' that gained and Axe are from a bunch of spares I got from a guy who was going to throw them out (!) after building an army. I recommend always checking out the 2nd hand tables at conventions and asking other gamers if they have any spare bits they'd like to trade, sell or even give to you

yep, 21p each or an incredible £7.70 for a bag of  50 of the same type!

Nice work, shows how this models can look dramatically better if small parts are changed. I still love the gorkamorka head sculpts, kinda wish GW had gone more for that look combined with the classic metals than the Brian Nelson Orks but you can't have everything I guess...

I think the crossbow looks fine, but then again historically crossbows got pretty insanely big. The axe is pretty cool too.

Love them, just goes to show how models can be improved and altered.
