(link possibly posted elsewhere in this forum) Fantasy Flight has just announced the launch of a new version of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite.asp?eidm=93&enmi=Warhammer%20Fantasy%20Roleplay It appears to have it's own special dice as well (* suspicious* FFG seem to never miss a trick when it comes to accessories or collectables, no wait, cards as well...?) Man, FF are hard to keep up with, I had no idea this was coming! I need to keep a closer eye on them!
I gotta say, I was expecting FF to eventually bring out a new edition of WHFRP, but I thought it would be mostly a case of new artwork and a few rule tweaks here and there … but Cards? Special Dice? 4 Rulebooks? Some how this doesn’t seem like the direct successor to the D10/D100 based system that Fantasy Flight took over from Black Industries a few years back (which I own a lot of the books for), this looks like a whole new system… The special dice have me very intrigued according to the site there’s: Characteristic dice (blue D8), Reckless dice (red D10), Conservative dice (green D10), Fortune dice (white D6), Expertise die (yellow D6), Misfortune die (black D6), Challenge die (purple D8). It’s hard to make out from the pictures but they seem to be marked with all kinds of Warhammer-y symbols (skulls, comets, hammers and swords), But what do they do? And where’s the D100? I have a feeling I will be buying this anyway for good or for ill

Might be a painful experience, to see everything you once loved changed beyond recognition!
I'm very suspicious about the cards, but then I view most CCGs as a mysterious money-taking mooney cults or just conkers-gone-wrong. The dice reminded me of HQ (?!) The art might be pretty good though. I'm assuming they've kept WHFRP's hallmark careers choices ... "30 different careers and 4 different races offer a multitude of character options" Funnily enough, considering WHFRP was set in a grim world of strife created by chaos, I used to find some of the illustrations and career descriptions almost too civilised, sort of Tudor and Renaissancey. But then I'm a Norsca furs and big swords kind of guy. I wonder how much of the the Warhammer brand has crossed over? So far I've only seen that box set of the four books. Looks pricey. I wants it, but I donts trusts it... |

In my quest to find out more about the new game I came across this http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/ffg_content/wfrp/WFRP-download-promo/wfrp_day_late_shilling_short.pdf
It’s a demo scenario for the new game, there’s not much information about the game in here, but from this and the scant other bit of info about the new WFRP I have learned the following. The new game is not a D10/D100 based system and seems to entirely use it’s own special dice. Like wise the stat line has changed and the M, WS, BS, A attributes (which IMHO make Warhammer and it’s off shoot systems recognisable) are missing all together. Then there’s a Stance Meter, a token track of some kind made of little puzzle sections on which are placed Stance Rings. And also there are Tracking tokens and Activation Tokens along with Progress Trackers in addition to the special dice I’ve mentioned before. Also did I mention the Stress and Fatigue counters and the cards – and dear god are there a lot of cards - Basic Action Cards, Special Action Cards, Location Cards, Talent Cards, Wound Cards, Miscast Cards and probably many other kinds of card too. This all seems needlessly complicated, whatever happened to only needing a hand full of D10’s and a stack of books? Yea, the changes in game play are almost shocking in their differences. It’s my initial impression that 3rd Edition WFRP is not really WFRP. The system doesn’t even seem vaguely compatible with 2nd or 1st edition WFRP and I’m beginning to wonder why it carries the name, ok it uses the same background but the game itself seem to very different. In fact it seems to be very abstract in it’s execution and more of a card based story telling game than an RPG. Also all these Counters and Tokens remind me of FF’s hit dungeon game Descent. “Descent Fantasy Roleplay” would make more sense as a title so far as the system goes (or maybe “Advanced Cards and Counters”) Me too, I’m considering getting some to see if I can use them with HeroQuest The Warhammer World has it’s fair share of Conan types, but WFRP games (I’m talking of 1st and 2nd here, I can’t speak for the new game yet) are intended to be for the most part in the Empire which in many ways is like Renaissance Germanic Europe with it’s city states and political intrigue. Games like Path To Glory (which is set in the Northern Wastes) and Warhammer Quest (which is mostly set in the World’s Edge Mountains) have more of a classic ‘swords and sorcery’ feel to them, but Chaos is always present in the Warhammer World wither it be bands of Chaos Warriors pillaging the out-lying villages of the northlands or secret cults performing their twisted rites beneath the streets of the great cities, threatening to destroy the Empire from within.
