My Painted Miniatures (so far)

I decided to pick back up my paint brush and attempt miniatures again. To start off with I focused on my figures from Dark World and will later work on HeroQuest and then D&D Castle Ravenloft minis.

*I have painted a few of the shown models many years ago using ornament acrylic paints (which is why some may look like they contain sparkles or are glossy).

I am still using basic craft acrylic paints (but this time not the holiday versions of colors) as well as a variety pack of brushes. Once I'm feeling confident on my painting and if I get more into it I will most likely start buying the name brand mini paints.

After taking pictures of the "completed" minis I am noticing a lot of areas needing touched up. So right now I'm working on the Heroes of Dark World and I'm making sure to take my time and force myself to use a more detailed brush to get closer on the edges.

I'm also still trying to get the hang of dry-brushing and using a dark wash (with consistant results) afterwards.

The up-close shots;

^I really like how the Sorcorer's item turned out

^The manticore was my first mini with blended/bleeding colors together

^The Ogre was the first mini done in a dark wash

^The mummy was done in antique gold base, antique white on top, with a dark wash to finish

^Out of the orcs, the left one was later on and I like how I changed up the hilt color of the weapon

Anyhow, just thought I would post these up and grab any input from anyone that wants to share. I will hopefully finish up the heroes in the next week and get them on the page also. Then I'm off to my HeroQuest minis.

Re: My Painted Miniatures (so far)

To be brutally honest I think you've made some steps towards learning the basic techniques but your choice of paints has let you down (also the DarkWorld miniatures don't take paint too well) - still it's a start

Anyway, welcome to the forum  I hope you'll enjoy being a member and please make a post in The Introductions Area before you continue

My sentiments would echo those of Mort.
Get yourself some good quality paints and you'll go much further, much faster!

You're accurate at least, so it shouldn't be hard for you to keep getting better.

Well I finally got around to posting my hero figures. They can be found via the link provided in the original post or right below.

I also added some detail to my Sorceror (put some red in around the waist and white fangs).

Stay tuned for pictures of my completed HeroQuest figures (hopefully I will finish them soon).

As far as my paint selection I have added P3 Black Primer (which all of my HQ minis are in currently) and a couple of more color choices (browns and metallics) which are already looking better on the HQ skeletons.

Looks like you’re making progress with your painting, may I recommend buying a pot of Army Painter ‘Strong Tone’ wash to help with your shading

Thanks and I will look into more washes. Right now I have a p3 "armor" wash that I used on the knight and dwarf but I am still learning how much of it to use, if it still needs watered down, and on how much to cover on the mini (armor only or whole thing being it is an "armor" wash).

I'll try to get a new thread going soon with my HQ minis completed so far and the foam cutout I made for them in their box.

Re: My Painted Miniatures (so far)

You should be able to use P3 washes as they are directly from the bottle – apply it to anywhere on the model you want to add shading of your chosen colour, in an even covering layer like you would paint (make sure you don’t put too much on), leave it to dry and let the wash do the rest

i would take a guess and say "in the flesh" these would look miles better than they do in the pics, as they are pretty extreme close up in harsh light!

i know Mortis will literally SHIT when I say this, but on skin i have recently, finally, got a technique that looks consistantly good...
elf flesh with a bangload of Gryphonne sepia on. i know they are GW paints, but i rate them, and they look great for flesh. I also recomend Nuln oil for GW, it really is a good wash for weapons.

back int he day i did lots of skeltons, amd hit on a really easy technique which i think is well sexy. paint them white.

flesh wash.

thats it.

i did the above with that.

you are doing great. just listen to mort, he has secret knowledge, and base them up too- they will look better
