Mounted Skaven Warlord

Warlord

An old idea of mine, originating as far back as 1988.
In 3rd Edition Warhammer there was mention of creatures known as Wolf Rats, with the same stats as Giant Wolves.
For a long time, no such minis were produced so my idea to mount a skaven warlord on one had to wait.

Then I got my hands on a big rat from the now-defunct Rackham and their Confrontation game.
Using parts from two different old Chaos Knights, a the big rat (intended for goblin knights in Confrontation) and some skaven bits from Mordheim I whipped this guy together and now, 26 years late, my idea became reality.

It seems Forge World now makes Wolf Rats. Too little, too late, fellas.

In retrospect I wonder if shouldn't have made some sort of back banner for this mini, or at least painted him in slightly gauider colours. But then again, dark and dirty is the skave way.

Re: Mounted Skaven Warlord

Nicely done, Excellent conversion work and paint job - I think darker colour schemes work best for Ratmen all round. I would say that a back banner and/or more ornate equipment would make the rider stand out better as a Warlord though, he looks as he is like a normal Ratman, albeit a mounted one.

I too had similar ideas when I saw Rackhams Goblins mounted on rats, but I never bought them. Other ambitions in this direction included converting Wolf-rats using Citadel plastic Wolves (again mounts for Goblins), Rat-ogre heads and Skaven tails - again this never came to be.

More recently however I discover that a company called Black Cat Bases make these miniatures called 'HumRats' as part of their Post-Apocalypse range

Some are more Post-Apocalypse that others, but I think that most, if not all of them could be made to fit a fantasy setting with little to no conversion work. I own the one with the sword and may one day get round to painting it.

Re: Mounted Skaven Warlord

The one with the sword pretty much is a skaven, as-is.

The one perched on the rat about to fire the rifle could be a Jezzail sniper. I imagine some sort of special character.

Regarding the Confrontation rats, I have one or two unassembled in my bits box so if you want one I could chuck one in the mail for you, when my next paycheck comes in.

This month...not so good economy though.

no that's cool, I've got the Black Cat Bases one and I'm quite happy with it

besides I don't use cavalry much these days as my miniatures are rarely seen outside of the dungeon these days

Also I've got a Reaper Kickstarter reward on it's way later this year (hopefully this year) which if I recall correctly contains some new interesting rat-like monsters for my dungeon
